Golden Knights vs. Rangers pick

Rangers ML (-154)

The Rangers’ season started to turn in early December. They are 15-4-3 in their past 22 games and goaltender Igor Shesterkin is showing more of his Vezina Trophy form, with a .922 SV% in 18 starts during that stretch.

Even as the Rangers mix and match lines, trying to find the right linemates for star winger Artemi Panarin, the Blueshirts continue to get results.

Depth has been crucial for the Rangers. Naturally, Panarin, fellow forward Mika Zibanejad, and defenseman Adam Fox scored during the Rangers’ resurgence, but center Filip Chytil leads the team with 11 goals in the past 22 games.

D-man K’Andre Miller has 17 points, and right winger Kaapo Kakko enjoys 15 points in that span, too, so the supporting cast is making a difference.

That poses a problem for a Vegas team that's suddenly struggling at the top end of the lineup. Hockey isn't typically a sport where one player makes or breaks a roster, but it sure looks like captain Mark Stone’s absence has been too much for the Knights to handle.

Vegas has several regulars injured but in six games without Stone, the Golden Knights have a 1-4-1 record, and they're getting just 44.6% of five-on-five score-and-venue-adjusted expected goals. They're a Top 10 team in that metric over the full season but rank 28th since their captain was injured.

Stone’s loss also sabotaged the production of first-line center Jack Eichel, as he has just one assist and 11 shots on goal in the past six games.

While the Knights try to figure out how to deal with their injuries, they're not ready to handle a Rangers team that's on the way up.
