    2010-2011 Bowl List with Tie-ins
Here is an up to date list that I found for the 2010-2011 College Bowl season:

    BCS:

BCS Title Game: BCS #1 vs BCS #2
Rose: Big 10 vs Pac 10
    Fiesta: Big 12 vs at-large
    Sugar: SEC vs at-large
Orange: ACC vs at-large or Big East

    Others:
    Alamo: Pac-10 #2 vs. Big 12 #3
Armed Forces: C-USA #4 vs. MWC
Capital One: SEC #2 vs. Big Ten #2
Champs Sports: Big East #2 vs. ACC #3
    Chick-Fil-A: ACC #2 vs. SEC
Cotton Bowl Classic: Big 12 #2 vs. SEC
Dallas Football Classic: Big Ten #6 vs. C-USA
EagleBank: MAC #4 vs. ACC #8
Emerald: WAC Champion vs. Pac-10 #6
    Gator: Big Ten vs. SEC
GMAC: MAC #2 vs. ACC #9
    Hawaii: C-USA #3 vs. WAC #4
    Holiday: Pac-10 #3 vs. Big 12 #5
Humanitarian: WAC #2 vs. MWC #4
Independence: MWC #3 vs. ACC #7
Insight: Big 12 #4 vs. Big Ten
International: MAC #3 vs. Big East #5
Las Vegas: MWC Champion vs. Pac-10 #5
    Liberty: SEC #8 vs. C-USA
Little Caesars Pizza: MAC #1 vs. Army
Meineke Car Care: ACC #4 vs. Big East #4
Music City: ACC #6 vs. SEC #7
New Mexico: WAC #3 vs. MWC
New Orleans: Sun Belt #1 vs. C-USA #5
Outback: Big Ten #3 vs. SEC
Papa John's Pizza: Sun Belt #2 vs. SEC #9
Poinsettia: MWC #2 vs. Navy OR WAC #5
St. Petersburg: Big East #6 vs. C-USA #6
    Sun: Pac-10 #4 vs. ACC #5
Texas: Big 12 #6 vs. Big Ten #7
Yankee: Big East #3 vs. Big 12 #7

With the addition of the Dallas and Yankee Bowls, this now adds up to 36 bowl games, which means that 72 teams will be needed. That number is well over half of the 120 teams that currently play FBS Football. At this rate, many schools will play in 30-40 consecutive bowl games or more, unless they are banned for a season.

In this bowl schedule, compared with last year...

Which bowls were the winners and losers?
          Which conferences were the winners/losers?

I do not know if you can necessairily determine a winner or loser in a bowl, but you can in the conferences. By sheer number, ther is not a major difference. The SEC gains a tie-in, and now has 9. The Big 10 still has 8. The SEC and Big 10 play each other in 3 bowl games, all in Florida (Capital One, Gator, and Outback). The Big 12 actually loses a bowl game, going from 9 to 8. The ACC remains at 8, but loses the Gator Bowl, and gains the Sun Bowl against the Pac 10. The Pac 10 remains at 6, but adds the Alamo Bowl against the Big 12 and drops the Pointsettia Bowl. The Big East also has 6 Bowls, but loses the Gator Bowl. The Champs Bowl against teh ACC is now their non-BCS Bowl Highlite. The MWC adds two tie-in's, the Independence Bowl vs the ACC and the Humanitarian Bowl vs the WAC. That gives them a total of 6. CUSA drops one to 6. The WAC adds 1 for a total of 4. The MAC remains at 3. The Sun Belt gains 1 for a total of 2. Army and Navy are guaranteed Bowl games if they win 6 or more regular season games. The Army would play in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl aginst the MAC Champ, and the Navy would play in the Pointsettia Bowl against the MWC #2 team.

So the big winner in terms of additional bowl games was the MWC, adding two to their list. The Big loser in actual numbers was the Big 12,losing one game, but they still have 8 bowl tie-ins. IMO, the Big loser in terms of quality bowl games and money is the Big East. By losing their biggest non-BCS Bowl game (Gator) and replacing it with the Champs Sports Bowl, they take a pretty big hit financially. They still play the ACC twice and the Big 12 once, but they now get the ACC #3 and 6 teams, and the Big 12's #7. Their Bowl line-up, featuring the Champs Sports, Yankee, Meineke, Intermational, and St. Petersburg bowls is the weakest of all the BCS Conference line ups. This is another reason why Notre Dame may be looking at the Big 10 more seriously. The Irish are tied into the Big East Conference for bowl games except the BCS Bowl games. The Gator and Sun Bowls were the two big prizes, but the Big East has lost both of those bowls now. In the meantime, the Big 10 now has 3 bowls played in Florida, on New Years Day. That certainly has to be a lot more attractive to the Irish.

The Pac 10 took a step up quality wise, now having their two top games against Big 12 opposition, and another against the ACC. The other two Bowls are against the MWC Champ and the WAC Champ, unless one (or both, loke last year) go to BCS games. Not a bad line up at all. The SEC is still the best by far, playing the Big 10 3 times, the Big 12 once, and the ACC twice.

Yeah, from first glance, it looks like the Pac-10 is going to be in higher quality games.

The Pac10 definately needs this,if they hope to get more than one team in a BCS game. They also have to step it up a notch, after last season's terrible performances. With Oregon a major question mark now, this looks like a wide open scramble between the above mentioned Oregon, Oregon State, with Washington, Cal, and Stanford definately worth a hard look. Oh yea, then there is USC, who is always worth a hard look, and now is the favorite in Vegas to win the Pac 10.

The bowls and conference winners have to be measured against the money to share into each bowl. A special case is Cotton bowl. They are a big winner, not so much for the increase on money to share, but for the stadium change. Alamo also got a big money boost. Capital One bowl is still the one with the most money among non-BCS.

Among conferences, Big East now is in a bunch of $750,000 bowls (the minimum). So, they are the losers here. Army & Navy could be considered winners, as they have an assured bowl not too far from home.

"Army & Navy could be considered winners, as they have an assured bowl not too far from home." I do not think that San Diego is right around the corner from Annapolis MD. The Navy will play in the Pointsettia Bowl. I totally agree that the Big East plays in a bunch of "minimum" payout bowl games. Another strong reason for Notre Dame to consider moving on and joining the Big 10.

Oops, you are right. I was thinking about the base on San Diego. My mistake.

Yankee bowl is a cold game? Watch for Humanitarian bowl in Boise, Idaho.

The Yankee Bowl is being played in Yankee stadium. In December. Should be a thrill, especially for the poor Big 12 Team that gets sent to play there. Probably some Big 12 North team.

As far as the ACC Bowl tie-ins are concerned, they are not that bad, considering how bad the conference has been. Things may change. You have some very good coaches in the ACC now, like Davis of UNC, Grobe of Wake, and Johnson of Ga. Tech. You have the reemergence of Miami and Florida State. You have the old stand-by's Clemson and Virginia Tech. You have Boston College, who always seems to over-achieve. That is a good competitive group. Unfortunately, none of them did anything to attract national attention. They lost most of their key non-conference games. Give them time. Eventually their bowl tie-ins will improve. The problem is that they have to improve at the SEC or Big 10's expense, and that is going to be difficult.

As far as the tie-ins for tis year are concerned, they are set. Now things may change, but normally they do not this late in the game. The Big East and MAC each lost a tie-in with the International Bowl folding up. The Big East is down to 5, and the MAC down to 2 now.
