    Report: Newton, father sought money

    Updated Nov 10, 2010 12:54 AM ET
Auburn star Cam Newton and his father admitted in separate phone conversations that schools recruiting the quarterback would have to come up with money beyond a scholarship to secure his services, according to an ESPN report.

ESPN on Tuesday cited “two sources who recruit for Mississippi State,” and said that the school’s compliance officials reported the conversations to compliance officials for the Southeastern Conference in January, according to “two other sources close to the football program.”

Reached late Tuesday night by phone, Cecil Newton Sr., told FOXSports.com that he had no comment.

“I’m not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place,” Cecil Newton said.

Asked if he had seen the report, the elder Newton said that he knew “nothing about this whole thing.”

“I’ve answered what I need to answer,” Cecil Newton said. “If they’re out there, go with it and make the decision or determination based on whatever you’ve got to say.”

He described all of the recent allegations involving his son as “a witch hunt.”

“They can continue doing whatever they’re doing, sir,” said Cecil Newton, who added, “I’m just in support of my son.”

Before Cam Newton, widely considered the current front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, committed to Auburn, one of the

Mississippi State recruiters said Cecil Newton told him it would take “more than a scholarship” to land his son, ESPN said.

The recruiter said the school would not be willing to do that.

After committing to Auburn, Cam Newton phoned another recruiter and said his father had chosen Auburn because “the money was too much,” according to ESPN.

Last week, ESPN.com reported that a man named Kenny Rogers claimed to represent Newton and allegedly sought $180,000 for him to attend Mississippi State. Rogers allegedly told former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond that other schools had already offered $200,000.

On Monday, FOXSports.com reported that Cam Newton had three different instances of academic cheating while attending the University of Florida and faced potential expulsion from the university, according to a source.

The NCAA is investigating allegations surrounding the Newtons.

Was watched 30 for 30 last night with Marcus Dupree, the former OU star who was being advised by a "reverend" who acted like an agent and eventually screwed him out of his money, degree, and NFL prospects.

Now we see Newton's father and can't help to think the same.

Stop listening to priests, nuns, and all these uneducated (sorry, but very few, if any, have college degrees or actual experience in anything) people for business advice.

REPORT: Who the hell cares? Pretty clear he is going to get popped. Let's save the "REPORT" thing for something a little more shocking, like REPORT: The sun will rise in the morning.

                  Thanks anyway Captain Obvious
