Wow Mike Soroka tore his achillies heel tonight and is out for the year. Big blow to the Braves chances in this shortened season imo.

The Angels will promote top prospect Jo Adell, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). The club is off tonight, so he’ll have his first shot at playing in the majors tomorrow evening.
Adell entered each of the past two seasons as a consensus top-ten prospect leaguewide. Selected out of high school in the first round of the 2017 draft, he has certainly hit his ceiling as a prospect. Now we’ll see whether he can do so as a major leaguer.
Given the timing of the promotion, Adell will not be able to accrue a full season of MLB service this year. He’s now on track to reach free agency after the 2026 season. If he holds down a roster spot from this point forward, Adell will surely qualify for arbitration in advance of the 2023 season as a Super Two player.
The 21-year-old Adell has generally thrived on his way up the ladder. He didn’t impress at Triple-A last year after a late-season promotion, but he showed well in the Arizona Fall League and doesn’t really have anything left to prove. All told, Adell owns a .298/.361/.518 batting line in the minors.
Most prospect watchers expect Adell to grow into added power. He’s already driving the ball all over the field and has the wheels to take extra bases. That speed also serves Adell well in the outfield, where he also possesses a big arm.
There’s really not much not to like. Adell does have some swing and miss but not so much that it’s considered a likely hindrance. As with any prospect, there’s a wide variance of potential outcomes. But Halos fans have every reason to be excited to welcome another premium talent to the roster.

Braves starter Mike Soroka had to be helped off of the field after suffering an evident injury. He was attempting to cover first base when he came up limping and ultimately could not bear weight on his right leg.
While it’s obviously far too soon to know what kind of prognosis Soroka will face, replays suggest he may well have suffered damage to his Achilles tendon. That could be a potentially devastating injury to the hurler, who turns 23 tomorrow.
Soroka was excellent last year, his first full campaign in the majors, as he earned an All-Star nod and came in second in the A.L. Rookie of the Year voting. He finished the season with 174 2/3 innings of 2.68 ERA pitching.
It had been more of the same early in 2020, as he carried a 1.59 ERA through his first two outings. While Soroka is anything but overpowering, he has succeeded to this point in his young career by keeping batters off balance and limiting the long ball.
Soroka is on track for likely arbitration qualification as a Super Two player after the 2020 season. His earning power would be reduced greatly if he’s unable to participate fully in the truncated season.
Any significant absence would obviously also pose a major problem for the Braves. They’re already missing Cole Hamels and Felix Hernandez from the anticipated rotation mix.

                                  On this date.....

Nolan Ryan brawling with Robin Ventura, it's been 27 years!

Combat sports are among those that have returned post-coronavirus, but there's nothing like a good ol' baseball brawl.
One of the most famous dust-ups took place on Aug. 4, 1993 -- 27 years ago today, hard as that is to believe.

Speaking of 27, Nolan Ryan was in the 27th and final year of his Hall of Fame career, pitching for the Texas Rangers. Ryan, age 46, was facing former All-Star and Gold Glover Robin Ventura, 20 years his junior, with the Chicago White Sox. Ryan plunked Ventura, and then this happened:

They will probably call around the league to find a veteran arm that can help their rotation. Giants might consider dealing Cueto or Shark which I think would benefit them greatly to do so because neither of those guys factor into their long term plans.

Royals starter Brad Keller will make his season debut Thursday against the Cubs, manager Mike Matheny announced (via Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com). The right-hander has been behind schedule because of a positive coronavirus test.
The 25-year-old Keller is about to begin his third season as a member of the Royals, who grabbed him during the December 2017 Rule 5 Draft. While Rule 5 picks rarely turn into productive major leaguers, Keller has proved to be a steal for the Royals. He has totaled 2.0-plus fWAR in each of his two seasons in Kansas City, with which he has amassed 305 2/3 innings of 3.68 ERA/3.98 FIP pitching with 6.42 K/9, 3.53 BB/9 and a 52 percent groundball rate.
Getting Keller back won’t suddenly turn a 3-9 club into a a contender, but it should at least make KC more competitive. The Royals’ rotation hasn’t been particularly productive this year, but Danny Duffy and rookie Brady Singer have performed respectably over a combined six starts.

I don't like the Pirates chances right now at 2-9.

Angels' Mike Trout homers in first at-bat since birth of son

Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout homered in his first at-bat as a father, turning on a 2-2 slider from the Mariners' Mike Dunn and launching it 407 feet in the first inning of Tuesday's 5-3 win at Seattle.

Trout, six days removed from his previous game, entered Tuesday batting .324/.428/.639 for his career against the division-rival Mariners.

The home run, a solo shot to left-center, was his 42nd against Seattle, his most against any team and second behind only the total of Rafael Palmeiro, who had 10 more home runs against the Mariners in 58 more games.

Trout finished 1-for-3 with a walk.

His velocity is sitting around 88-89 and that is just asking for trouble against Major League hitters. I feel bad for him but it's quite clear the Giants were right to let him go because he isn't the same pitcher anymore and he may never get it back.

Tough to repeat as champs even in a 60 game season. This year is really going to come down to who stays the healthiest and who has the best bullpen I think.

Kim, 32, had been slotted into the relief unit after battling for a starting job in camp. He has made just one relief appearance, picking up a save but allowing an earned run on two hits.
The southpaw will step into the rotation spot left when Carlos Martinez recently hit the injured list. Whether Kim can hang onto a rotation job will depend upon many factors, with his performance and the duration of Martinez’s absence likely chief among them.
Kim, a long-time Korea Baseball Organization standout, joined the Redbirds over the offseason. He’s earning at a $4MM rate this year and is guaranteed the same in 2021, with an annual $1.5MM incentive package also available.
