#2525Nationals' Max Scherzer exits start after 1 inning with tweaked hamstring
WASHINGTON -- Max Scherzer is the type who is going to try to play if he can, even on a tweaked right hamstring that prevents him from driving his lower body into his pitches.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner gave it a shot Wednesday for the Washington Nationals against the New York Mets. It was clear right away -- to him, his catcher, his pitching coach and his manager -- that the usual power and command were missing.
Scherzer exited because of the leg issue after laboring through one inning in the Mets' 3-1 victory over Washington.
"The best decision,'' said Scherzer, who needed 27 pitches to get three outs, then gave way to Erick Fedde, "was just to get out of the game.''
He revealed afterward that he felt something wrong with the hamstring before his previous start six days earlier against Toronto. He pitched anyway in that one and ended up throwing an MLB season-high 112 pitches across 7⅓ scoreless innings.
The leg acted up again when Scherzer was doing his usual sprinting Tuesday ahead of facing the Mets.
"He said he was good enough to pitch,'' manager Dave Martinez said. "He went out there, and he couldn't really push off. I mean, that's what we noticed.''
Scherzer's fastball was in the low 90s, and he walked the first hitter, then gave up a single to the second.Comment -

#2531The Yankees announced Thursday that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Nick Tropeano from their alternate training site. He’ll go onto the 40-man roster and into the big league bullpen. Right-hander Tommy Kahnle, who had Tommy John surgery earlier this week, was moved to the 45-day IL to clear a 40-man spot for Tropeano.
It’s a homecoming of sorts for Tropeano, a Long Island native who grew up a Yankee fan. The 29-year-old (30 later this month) has pitched in parts of five big league seasons, working to a combined 4.51 ERA with 8.0 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 1.57 HR/9. Tropeano was at one point a fairly well-regarded prospect in the Astros and Angels organizations, but his career has been derailed by persistent arm injuries. The righty had Tommy John surgery with the Angels back in 2016 and has since battled shoulder and elbow troubles that have limited him to a combined 182 innings (between the minors and big leagues) across the 2017-19 seasons.
Tropeano was hit hard in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League least year, posting a 5.87 ERA in 79 2/3 frames. That’s a notoriously hitter-friendly setting in the first place, though, and the same changes to the ball composition that led to a record level of home runs hit in the Majors also impacted Triple-A. Prior to the 2019 season, Tropeano carried a career 3.67 ERA in 223 Triple-A frames.Comment -

#2536Another reason to hate the Cardinals. Did they go to another casino??Comment -
#2537Hopefully they don't stick with the new Extra Inning rules next season. This is nerve racking sweating a bet on a road team when the home team is awarded a man at 2nd Base. Nope I liked baseball where you had to earn your way on base and earn victories instead of being gifted a huge built in advantage.Comment -
#2538And I lost my wager on the Astros but even if I somehow won I still wouldn't like the extra inning rule. I think its fine for this year because you risk getting your pitchers hurt having to use so many in extra inning games but I'd rather there not be a man at second to start the inning even though both teams start that way. Call me old school but I like the drama of an extra inning game when a team comes up with a big hit after they create their own rally.Comment -
#2539I agree hate this extra innings stuffComment -
#2540The Reds have acquired outfielder Mark Payton from the Athletics for cash considerations, Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweets. Cincy took Payton from Oakland during last winter’s Rule 5 Draft, but it returned him to the A’s on July 21.
The 28-year-old Payton entered the pro ranks as a seventh-round pick of the Yankees in 2014, and he hasn’t played in the majors yet. However, he is coming off a 2019 in which he was a tremendous minor league producer. Payton logged 447 plate appearances with the A’s top minors affiliate, mashed 30 home runs and hit .334/.400/.653 – good for a 148 wRC+ even in the offensively charged Pacific Coast League. He only struck out in 17 percent of trips to the plate, so Payton certainly wasn’t selling out for power.Comment -

#2551The Los Angeles Angels optioned Luke Bard to their alternate site today, recalling Patrick Sandoval in his place, per Jason Martinez of Roster Resource over at Fangraphs.
Sandoval made his major-league debut last season going 0-4 across 10 appearances (9 starts). His first start of the season came last week in a 10-2 Angels win over the Mariners. Sandoval didn’t get the win as he lasted only 4 innings, though he more than did his part in contributing to the win. Sandoval threw 62 pitches – 40 for strikes – notching 4 strikeouts, walking one, and giving up 2 runs (though only 1 was earned). The 23-year-old southpaw entered the year as the Angels’ #7-ranked prospect per MLB.com, #6 by Fangraphs. The Angels certainly hope/expect the lefty and his 55-grade curveball will establish himself as a rotation mainstay – a role they’ve struggled to consistently fill over the years.
Sandoval made his second start of the season tonight, going six strong innings while allowing two runs. He’s quickly becoming a favorite of manager Joe Maddon. While the plan was for Sandoval to throw between 70-80 pitches, Maddon allowed him to hang around for 94. Sandoval continues to develop nicely after the Angels acquired him from Houston for Martin Maldonado just before the 2018 trade deadline.
Bard, 29, is looking to establish himself as a righty out of Maddon’s pen. Across 32 appearances last season, Bard logged 49 innings with a 4.78 ERA/4.81 FIP, showing off his ability to hold the line for multiple innings at a time if need be. He has just one inning so far this season – it was scoreless. In all likelihood, he’ll find himself back in the Angels’ pen before too long.Comment -
