There's a story that Rick Vaive refused a young Shanahan Leafs fan an autograph. Once in the NHL years later, Shanahan went after Vaive who found out after the pummelling that it was over the jilted autograph request.

Metropolitan division is crowded at the top. Is it the toughest division in terms of parity?

Leafs 4th round goalie pick Dennis Hildeby is 6'5".

When on his knees his shoulders reach the cross bar.

Camp reports on his atheticism and play are exciting and promising.

            BTW, Ken Dryden: 6'4".

The Leafs have needed a good goalie since the 90's.

When the Cup does its victory tour during the summer, it doesn't have the recent team's players' names on on it yet. This year, for the first time, it was engraved with the team name and year before the tour, but the players' names don't get added until October.

Terry Sawchuk gets voted best Leafs goalie all time in a good number of fan polls. Johnny Bower is usually up there too. I think both were on the 1967 team that last won the Cup for Toronto, and if memory serves they shared the Vezina that year. Also had Jacques Plante for a while, who I believe crafted and wore the first goalie mask. Mike Palmateer had a decent run. They also had Cujo for a bit.

With players returning from injury, Penguins have a nice problem, having to decide whther Rust stays on Crosby line, or steps down to a steadying presence on the club's second line.

Blue Jackets quietly rebuilding. Missed playoffs for a couple of years. Could make noise this season.

Jets signed Dubois to a one year, $6,000,000 after last season's 81 game, 60 point season.

School boy math says that means an NHL point is worth a $100,000.

I find history interesting, so had to look this up.

Sawchuck and Bower won the shared Vezina in the 1964-65 season. The Maple Leafs lost in the Semifinals to the Canadiens in 6 games that year.

Neither man won the Vezina in 1966-67, but they did win the Cup in 6 games vs the Canadiens. Bower went 2-0, while Sawchuck went 2-2 including the series clincher game 6 which saw a 3-1 final score, including an empty net goal by Toronto.
