    Calculating equity and betting amount?
    Hello all,

I am a long term punter but trying to figure out more of the math behind it.

If I bet on a team/player at 3$ and their true value is 2$ how do I calculate the dollar amount I'm earning per dollar?

Is there also a way to calculate how many units I should bet depending on the equity I have?

Also should I bet every game where I found an edge or should there be a minimum edge before I should fork out money?

    thank in advance

    Hi tsty, Welcome to SBR!

Im not sure what you mean by true value of a player. It depends on your perceived edge. Maybe you want to risk based on %?

How many units you should bet depends on your own personal scale and what a unit means you is. Some folks might say if I have a 10% edge (my spread vs their spread or the line my bookie has is 10% better than the sharpest line out there (maybe pinnacle or SBO's NBA opener line) that may be 1 unit. If I have a 20% edge, that may be 5 units. A 25% edge might bring me up to 10 units. If you bet on Portland Trailblazers last week before some sportsbooks adjusted to the news that Blake Griffin was out, you might have bet 35 units.

The first question is division, 2 into 3, equity is your stake in the wager and would only apply if things change and you want to quit or bet more, what you mean is bank roll not equity, and yes the more true overlay the more you bet. In the 3/2 you are getting 1.5 /1 per bet profit and should bet about 32% of the amount you have to wager.

Thank mate that's what I was looking for

So I'm getting 50 cents profit for every dollar I bet?

Guess with the same thought process, then a 5$ bet priced at 6$ is different even if it's a dollar difference

5/6 getting 20 cents for every dollar?

Can I ask where you got the 32% from?
