The Oakland Raiders and longtime kicker Sebastian Janikowski are at a standstill in contract negotiations, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and the dispute could be the difference on whether Janikowski suits up for the Raiders this year.
The 39-year-old has played more games with the Raiders (268) than any other player in franchise history. The Raiders were hoping to rework Janikowski’s current deal Monday, which is set to make him $4 million this season, but Janikowski has refused, according to Schefter. The Raiders could reportedly resolve the issue as early as Tuesday by either adding a new kicker or Janikowski reworking his contract.
The Raiders worked out a trio of kickers Monday in Josh Lambo, Mike Nugent and Marshall Koehn, who all lost position battles over the weekend, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Lambo has spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Nugent has served as the Cincinnati Bengals’ kicker the last seven seasons and Koehn spent training camp with the Minnesota Vikings.
Oakland took Janikowski with the 17th overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft out of Florida State. He’s tied with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for the longest tenure with his current team as both joined the league in 2000.
Janikowski has been selected to one Pro Bowl and was the team’s kicker in its Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002.
The Raiders open their season on the road Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. They’re coming off their first 12-win season since Janikowski’s first year in the league in 2000.
