Who do you list as a reference on resume?
I graduate in May so looking to get in the door somewhere.

Applying for govt jobs right now...not sure who to list as a reference. For professional ones I have one in mind but who would you put as personal references? Should I put 21 year old barreled in friends on there, or what.

Help me out SBR. JJ Can I put you as a reference pal?

I'd recommend compaqdikk, he's got all the bases covered.

That's definitely a start. If Onthewhat didn't have a job, then they are his only source of reference to speak on his day to day qualities.

I am not really close with any of my professors. The majority of professors have hundreds of students per semester, etc. so only a select few are very close with professors, go meet with them, etc.

Not surprisingly, most of them who are close with professors are females too. Guys like me generally do not like to be on campus or in class more than they have to be.

I do have a job though and do have a couple of great references from there.

A large, national chain I used to work at has that policy.

I wouldn't do that to you sir. If anything I'd probably end up giving you a good reference. I would just tell the gentlemen that you Wii and play a lot of monopoly and you need that job to get Park Place out of hock.

I usually pay guys off for references for whatever type of job I am applying for so when employer calls it verifies.

I have two college professors, one fellow employee at my first job, and my current manager.

First, I wouldn't put references on the resume itself, make it a separate sheet. Strive to put at least three professional references (although I understand you might not have that many) anyone who was in a position to give you instruction would suffice, the higher "up" the better. For non-professional references think strongly about contacting a professor whose class you did well in or participated a lot in and asking if they would mind being used as a reference. Even if they don't know you or remember you specifically they usually wont mind, it's almost part of their job.

If necessary (only if you don't find a prof.) put a close family friend. Try to find one that is respected and objective, one that will espouse your good qualities but not come off as simply a touting family friend. For example I might have used my mothers friend who writes a local newspaper column and is a doctor of psychiatry.

If you have adequate professional references think twice about including any personal ones at all.

If you currently have a job, and have a couple "great" references there, I think your pretty much set man.
But ya, I agree with the aobve post, at least 3 professional references.

The US government uses online forms for this stuff. I've always heard you aren't supposed to give references unless asked. I assume they are asking for them since there is a part of the form that is geared towards references?

                                        Thanks for the advice boys.

Oh yeah if it is US gov't they are doing it for character reference reasons. Want to make sure you are not just a good employee (professional references) but also not a total creep.

I am always looking for good qualified help. I look for experience in the field before the degree but if you have the degree you will get paid more. What do you have experience in? I am in the Health Care field, working with Adults/Children with developmental disabilities. If you are in Southern California hit me up. I need 2 Assistant House Supervisor's.

                                                      I would just put...

                                                      References: Available upon request.

And then if asked have about 3 or so people that would say good things about you. But don't use your mom, or gf, etc....

Generally try to have 1 or 2 be someone that you have previously worked with that liked you. I would call them and ask them if they mind.....And to let them know they may get a phone call about you. You could also talk to them about what you might like them to say....Something that would be beneficial and apply to the job that your are applying for.

You can also have 1 or 2 that are just good friend that you haven't worked with.....But would say some good things about your character.
