Thinking of taking $250,000 to Vegas and live there for a year. Amateur Poker player

Heres the deal, the stock market has been on fire lately and Im thinking of liquidating everything in my brokerage account. I will leave my 401k alone just in case the market continues its bull run.

I know cashing out of a 401k is costly with this size but I will only tap into this if my savings/Stocks funds dry up in Vegas.

I will be doing the following:
only playing 2-5 No limit.
I wont increase this limit.
Never play blackjack
Only 8 hour session max. Leave by 5pm (like work).
Only live in vegas for one year.

If I am up $50k Cash than I will stay another year. $50k might not be a lot to live in for a year but tax free $50k is money I am willing to live with.

I will also track my day to day activity here on SBR.

Dont know exactly when or how this will take place but It was just something I was thinking of lately. Gotta live it up while your young and stupid.

I'm sure the IRS would disagree that your poker winnings would be tax free.

Would not recommend.
Much better idea to move to Europe or Canada or overseas and play online or at the various casino wherever you are living (also access to Matchbbook, pinnacle, etc.) . I would imagine there is a lot better poker (to make a living) going on in certain other countries than in Vegas.

I played poker at that casino in Baden Baden Germany where Dostoyevsky lost his money. What a bunch of donks but you won't get by with just English living there.

To the OP, I dont see why you would need to touch your savings or stocks, 50 k is enough bankroll for 2/5 if you have the skill to make a living with it to begin with. Also, if i were you I would sell those stocks anyway. The thing that could be your downfall is throwing money around when ur on a winning streak because it seems like it will never end, then hitting a bad streak and realizing you blew your profits at the Spearmint Rhino.

I never thought this was too much money. My co-workers/family have a lot more saved up than I do. I always thought I blew too much money on my car/cothes. Time to re-focus and use the money to make money.

I use to play poker back in the party poker days, those were fun. Won several of those step ladder tournaments that really started my bankroll. However, with all the online poker scandals, I just dont trust it anymore. I will stick to live.

Yeah I guess so. I just feel like I need as massive bankroll for 2/5 in order to avoid variance.

My strategy is to hit up Bellagio or ceasars Thursday,Friday, and Saturday night starting at around 12am. I hear the drunks like to come out and play during that time.

But someone does bring up a good point. Maybe I should take a leave of absence or vacation days (I definitely dont have enough for a full month as I used a good amount already) and try it out for a month. hmmm Good call. I'll still post my plays and every once in awhile, make some sport bets while I let SBR whats going on.

Liquidating everything will result in capital gains tax and a possible large payment due the IRS down the road.

If you can stick with these, I will say you are far and away the most disciplined person on the planet. Poker is a very slow game and can I say boring? As with stocks will you set stop-losses for the day? What about have a number and if you get there you walk?

I don't see the attraction if you are beating the game at home, why the move to Vegas? So many distractions in Vegas.

Not saying Don't, maybe take a month off of work and give it a go, living in Vegas is allot different than visiting Vegas.

Your roll is too big to just play 2/5. I play 2/5 and I have about 30k. I'd play 5/10 at the Venetian. If you do play 2/5 Venetian/Aria are good spots I've heard. If Vegas dries up go to Florida....lots of poker there.

Do you really wanna sit around all day with a bunch of old farts, wanna be poker pros, newbie Vegas tourists' poker players looking to score big, and the locals who already do the same shit you're dreaming of doing? Grinding all day at 2/5 is gonna get old really fast, hope you're in good shape and don't end up with restless leg syndrome or worse, deep vein thrombosis from sitting all day.

My serious advice, if you feel you've got the chops, take 10 grand and enter the WSOP main event, also, you can play in a bunch of the other events to get a feel for real live tournament poker at the top level, against players from all over the world. Just think, make the final table at the main event and you're set for life if you win, and just making the final table would cement your reputation and earn you some serious coin. Plus the thrill of taking out a big time rounder in a major tournament beats cheesy ring games any day!

Better yet, take 20 grand, we'll both enter the main event with you staking me and I'll split 50/50 whatever I win, signed contract in writing. That way you've got two players in the field and just think about the possibilities if you're a gambling man. Hell, we both could end up at the final table. 20K is a drop in the bucket to a guy sitting on 250K. I regularly cash at my local casino tournaments and can furnish records of the big ones I've played in. A chip and a chair has always been my motto and any two cards. I fear no one, no matter who they are or what endorsement patch they're wearing. Best of luck.

Depending on how much revenue you made with those stocks... and furthermore your 401k... you're typically taxed pretty significant with these new tax laws. Have you really thought everything through? You'd lose right around 20-30% of your revenue on your gains... (depending on what tax bracket you fall into)

I actually think going to Vegas to play is a great ideal but not with the fear shown here. I would never have a losing week needing no bankroll at all.

yes if you know what you're doing you can grind out a profit and live meagerly. thats probably playing 8+ hours. i get bored with poker after 2 hours of sitting there. i just lose concentration . make your money work for you. rent out a house to someone which is guaranteed income as iifold and GG said . i dunnno what kind of rent you can get out there but im sure you would have a nice amount to play with online or at a local casino near your house and save some up for your own basic needs... or an add on to your income. again many make a living playing the game but you have to be as alert and cognitive as you are in the first hour as you are throughout the 8 hours of play. i rather have an office job then do that shit personally. but then again im not that good at the game and lose patience when i am down or when i lose damn coin flips. but i only know hold em and some omaha and there are a variety of games, still best thing rent a property out . bol.

You need to do more research before pulling the trigger.

Poker is a different type of job. Nobody plays from 8am to 5pm. Your best games are usually from like 6pm to 4am and playing full time is a physical and mental grind.
Chances are your living expenses will be more in Vegas. You won't be able to avoid variance, but with a higher bankroll + living expenses, you'll be able to weather it and still live comfortably.
You sound like a smart guy that has worked to get a good job. A career pulling in consistent income is worth something too.
Just because you've made some good runs at the local card room and party poker doesn't mean you're ready to do this for a living. I've never seen you play tho so you may be fully capable for all I know. Sounds like the "try it for a few weeks or a month" idea above is a good idea. Whatever you do, good luck

It is a dream that many of us have, and the majority get crushed. To play 2 5 for a year it is fine wit 25 000 if you manage your br properly, however many had giving you a better solution, play online .5 1 and see if you can triple up the original b r in 6 months just paying cash games in a 9 person tables and then , just then consider the live games in vegas.
Never mix your money, your bank roll must be winning poker money and you play poker with and only that money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you go broke you only lost your winnings, if you are as good as you think, we shall see you in TV within 2 years.
