Real Men Bet on American Idol

Basketball has treated me like she were a woman scorned as of late. And like any jilted lover, she brought pain into my life. I know how to take a hint, and will be giving her some time to calm down. I’ll revisit her come mid-March. I’ll take her to a Dance in hopes that her sweet lovins return to me.

Until then, I’ll stick to what I know best with MMA. Right around the corner is another game that I’ve had a high success rate with - American Idol. Live shows are currently airing to cut the contestant pool down to the final 12. I have been wagering on the show for two years, and was able to spot the eventual winner early on in both seasons in Jordin Sparks and David Cook. You can also wager each week on whom you believe may or may not go home. Forget football, this is a real mans’ event. It’s almost time to buckle up with Simon, Randy, Paula and what’s-her-face to make some Idol money again.

Matchbook currently has odds posted on the week-to-week qualifying rounds. As we get closer to the final 12, many other books will follow suit. It will be important to line shop, as odds on your favorite performer can vary quite a bit.

Unfortunately, I didn’t catch many of the audition shows, so I’m doing all of my studying now. I would like to put down something on these qualifying shows, but I just don’t know anything about these people yet. But if you have been paying closer attention than I, Matchbook is the place to be. You can even put money on whether the winner of Season 8 will be male or female. Male seems to be a pretty big favorite right now.

I’m not sure if Male is favored because there are already two males in the finals to one female. I have this for an early prediction – Neither of these two guys (Danny Gokey & Michael Sarver) will win the entire thing. Sarver is a minimally talented country singer, and how much talent do you really need to sing country?? He moved on because his personal life was featured several times on early shows. It’s an unfair advantage, but I don’t expect him to be around long.

Then there is fan favorite Gokey. Yes, he looks like Robert Downey Jr., and yes, he is talented. The problem is, his voice resembles last year’s winner, David Cook, too much. The voting public will tire of his sound towards the end of the show.

Sarver’s spot temporarily cost the gem of this cast a spot in the finals. Tatiana Del Toro has the potential to surpass Sanjaya Malakar and Jason Castro as Bread’s all time favorite AI nut. I say “temporarily”, because I feel she will be back for the Wild Card round. And all hijinks aside, the girl can actually sing! It’s not her singing I’m interested in though. I need this girl on the show. I’m stricken by her wacky antics.

    Tatiana, I need you!

I don’t care for Dial Idol and don’t use it. I enjoy using my own intuition and judgment. It’s worked for me so far. For those men out there who might feel a little hesitant about admitting that they actually placed a wager on American Idol, I say let it out! In this day and age our boundaries become more and more blurred. If you solely WATCHED Idol, then yes, that might be a little suspect. But once you place a wager on it, you are merely being a man! I have a friend who recently spent a couple of nights in the Pinellas County Jail. He told me that the only time that the shouting and bickering subsided, was when American Idol was on. I’m sure there were a couple tough guys in that gathering. I’m telling you that it’s OK now. My name is Harvey Milk and I’m here to recruit you!

Sorry. I got a little carried away there. See you in a few weeks once the show gets rolling.
