Yea but its sign of the times in Detroit, that city has gone straight to hell, NFL team worst ever, half the city's unemployed, automakers beggin for welfare, even their casinos are apparently layin ppl off.

I've been to Detroit and its a true shithole, Philly, Detroit, Memphis have just gone to hell

If you're a baseball fan, you might want to give the Tigers a miss.

I was really talkin about baseball tickets across the board, in Detroit its really fukin sad though, they spend 2nd most of any team but blow it on guys like D Willis and wonder why they suck so bad.

At least the Lions have an excuse they spend no money on that team and get what they pay for

Maybe the two new parks in New York are the only places you'll see season ticket sales up this year. I was thinking that that migt be up in Tampa after last season, but according to this piece, they're experiencing the pinch as well. Sternberg says they are higher than last year, but stops short of saying how much higher.

Talk about poor timing, now that the Tampa Bay Rays are winning they have to sell tickets through the biggest recession in decades.

The Rays stunned baseball last year by winning 97 games and their first American League pennant. But they have to fill more seats at Tropicana Field to support an increased payroll as they try to maintain their hold on first place in the competitive AL East.

"It wasn't the best year to win," Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg said.

The team, which started play as the Devil Rays in 1998, is counting on the excitement from last season to carry over to this year. Attendance was up nearly 30 percent last year but the Rays still averaged just 22,370 during the regular season - ahead of only Kansas City, Oakland, Florida and Pittsburgh.

"Clearly, we are being throttled somewhat by the economy," Sternberg said. "We're still going to be next-to-last in season-ticket sales. I'm pleased with the growth, but we have a ways to go yet."

Without providing specifics, Sternberg says ticket sales are up over last year. "We're right at expectations," is how he puts it.

yeah this will be an interesting summer, should be tons of empty seats in certains markets.
What do you expect when you see the same 4 teams make it to the playoffs every year. While other markets are on 15+ year playoff absences.
They would make ALOT more money if they made it 6 or 8 playoff teams per league, as well as pump up the fanbases.

i don't recall baseball teams folding in the 1930's or 40's, they need to readjust their expectations.

Minnesota Twins are doing well because people are buying season tickets to get priority seating for the new stadium that opens in 2010.

Dodgers don't have a problem selling season tickets. Close to 4 Million in attendance each season.
