#216Democratic lawmakers are calling out an apparent lack of racial data that they say is needed to monitor and address disparities in the national response to the coronavirus outbreak.
In a letter sent Friday to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, both from Massachusetts, said comprehensive demographic data on people who are tested or treated for the virus that causes COVID-19 does not exist. Over the weekend, cities with large black and nonwhite Hispanic populations emerged as new hot spots for the spread of the virus.
“Any attempt to contain COVID-19 in the United States will have to address its potential spread in low-income communities of color, first and foremost to protect the lives of people in those communities, but also to slow the spread of the virus in the country as a whole,” the lawmakers wrote to Azar.
“This lack of information will exacerbate existing health disparities and result in the loss of lives in vulnerable communities,” the letter warned.Comment -

#224And hindsight applies only to those who called this the flu and said we should do nothing. Many of us took this serious from the start and aren’t really surprised where this is and where it might go.

why do we live in this fantasy world where we expect government officials to be perfect as if they have some kind of crystal ball or something? they are human jus like us....

#225Just to make it clear I do follow politics and have my solid opinions but this is NOT a political post by any means. This is simply something that everyone should stop and think about.
Can you imagine the weight this man is feeling right now? We all experience difficult times in our life where anxiety is through the roof and we feel like the weight of the world is on us. When he signed up for this role (without pay) he did it for us Americans. He didn’t do it for the fame or glory, he had all that. He was willing to take on whatever, but the magnitude of what we’re currently experiencing has got to be paralyzing. And to some, NOTHING he does is ever right or good enough.
Do you ever wonder how he must be dealing with it all? When his head finally hits the pillow at night after press conferences and meetings, constantly trying to defend himself and protect our country.
Does he break down and cry from all the pressure?
Is he scared and confused?
Is he even able to sleep?
Can he shut his mind off at all?
Or does he lay there and talk to God all night praying for strength and answers?
Whether he’s making you proud or not, look at this photo and ask God to soften your heart just a little bit and lift this man up in prayer. He needs them right now more than ever. He is carrying the weight of OUR country on his shoulders and I don’t think anybody could or would be doing a better job then he is.
Feel free to share this post and remind everyone to be kind and to pray for President Trump and for the entire world 🙏🏼❤️
As always... if you don’t have anything nice to say, there’s NO NEED to comment.Comment -
#226Again, no hindsight in my statement either. Many people said weeks and even months ago this was serious. Many( I’m sure you’re included), including Trump were calling this the flu even when experts were saying it wasn’t. There was no hindsight here, just stubbornness and stupidity. The real humans listen to the experts and agreed this was serious. Trump and the rest of you didn’t. Luckily, he has a second chance to right the ship.Comment -

Let's do some simple 5th grade math based on his comment above. If any part of my math is incorrect feel free to correct me. "Everyone is gonna get it." Let's just assume he's talking only about the U.S. here. How many people live in the U.S.? Approximately 330 million. I'm rounding down to make sure he doesn't accuse me of any spin. Here's the math part... 330 million(everyone is gonna get it) times 5% deaths(his numbers)= 16,500,000. That's 16.5 million deaths according to HIS OWN numbers. The "media" is projecting FAR FAR fewer deaths... yet he is accusing THEM of fear porn.
When I first joined SBR more than a decade ago I foolishly believed that there would be a ton of math guys on here. But now I realize... SBR tends to attract people that understand math the LEAST. And this is why they bet on sports to begin with. They are no different than people that play the Lottery. Don't get me wrong... there are a lot of smart guys on SBR. But the poster above is definitely not one of them.Last edited by JohnGalt2341; 04-01-20, 02:15 PM.Comment -

That’s not hindsight on my part. I knew this would happen back then. Experts knew this would happen back then and were telling Trump but he wouldn’t listen because he thought it was the flu. You and Trump are just now understanding how serious this is. That’s hindsight on your part!Comment -

#236i agree ppl are bad at math. but this allows the media to portray the numbers in a scarier light. they are making it seem like 200k deaths is a huge number but it is much less than heart disease, cancer, or smoking. if the usa did nothing maybe over a million would die but second hand smoke has killed millions in the usa and its still legal to smoke. if you want more freedom that comes with more risk and this is not much of a risk to most ppl unless they are about to die already.Comment -

It's not that Trump was wrong (he was). It's that he
- refused to listen to the experts (even in his own bubble). The calls into Foxnews where he discounted their opinions with "my hunch is".
- held rallies AFTER he claims he already was calling it a pandemic
- completely spoke out of his ass when it came to estimates and timelines (again, ignoring what actual experts were telling him)
People make errors all the time. People who love Trump, love how he has no filter and speaks from emotion etc. Had he taken the estimates seriously (instead of bragging about his genius uncle at MIT and how everyone is amazed at how he "gets it"), it can be said without debate that more people (especially those who hang on his every word) would have taken this a lot more seriously.
To go from "15 soon to be zero" to "100,000 to 200,000 means we did a great job" (paraphrasing) is trying to whitewash the truth of what he said. He admitted just 23 days ago he didn't even know the regular flu killed people each year.
I'm happy his tone has changed. But as the leader of the country, his uneducated hunch and discounting of science has, and will continue, to cost more lives from this than it had to.
All this talk about how impeachment was a distraction is just garbage noise. He held multiple rallies, went golfing a bunch of times, met with countless people shaking hands, all after he now claims he was concerned and considering it a pandemic.Comment -

also note , things could be much much worse had they not done what they did when they did. I'll say it again theres no playbook on this. people right or wrong have pointed out Obama really wasn't swift acting on the swine flu either. thats life you live and learnComment -

I agree with what I put in bold. I have Libertarian values. If it were up to me I would legalize many more things than what we already have. But again... these things are personal choices... which I believe we deserve. I have elderly loved ones. I am mostly worried about them. But the truth is... none of us are necessarily invincible to this. I think we will see a lot more deaths involving healthy young people in the months to come. This virus is no joke. It deserves to be taken very seriously. We are all being affected by this. Pointing fingers is not going to do any good to resolve the issue. I would like to see less on both sides. Just ONCE I would like to see Trump say "I was wrong about this", as well as others... including Dems. We're still in the top of the 1st inning here... we've got a long way to go.Comment -
#242People are gonna blame Trump no matter what. Ya Trump got wrong when he hoped there would be 0 cases soon. Ok so? People get shit wrong. Cuomo could have bought masks and ventilators years ago. Isn't this his 3rd term? No one did it perfect. Lots of "blame" to go around but it seems the TDSers have only Trump to blame.
