No to both of your questions. You may use lethal force when confronted by a viable life threatening situation with regard to your house or car and other valuables.

You can never use lethal force when defending your property. House, car, ect.

You should add the caveat if it's unoccupied. If someone is occupied in that house or car, absolutely lethal force can be used. Doesn't matter the intent of the mob. "I only intended to set fire to the house/car and expected them to run out and not die" doesn't work. It's all if the person using force had a reasonable fear of death or great bodily harm.

If a mob of people run onto your lawn in the middle of the night with items that could be used to harm you or your family, can't you shoot them and just say that you felt that your life was threatened?

All depends, are they holding a molotov cocktail looking at the house while you're inside or are they looking to throw it at your car parked on the street with nobody inside?
