I think it’s something to do with how you bet them....like you can bet the #1 and #1a for the same price...grouped together

So if either of the #1 horses win, you win? Just seems strange.

I’m pretty sure horses are grouped together like that in a race when they have the same owner.

Usually both horses have same owner so are part of an entry

Yes, usually their odds tend to be lower if they're good horses, sometimes can get a decent show price if both finish in top 3

Yes, if there’s a 1 and 1a you have two horses for the price of one. If either one wins, you win.

coupled owner entry. they used to do this so one of an owners horses could be the rabbit. speed out to tire other front runners so that their good horse could close and defeat the early speed. that was 50 years ago. now they just enter them both and hope for two checks in the same race rather than race them separately. it would not be fair for the bettors to have them separated. yes, you get two horses for the price of one. one of them is usually a stiff and often gets scratched before the race. or one might be a mud horse in case it is an off track and off the turf if it was a grass race. which is why you see MTO main track only in the entries. that would be an automatic scratch if no rain. players hope the entry if both run finish 1-2. then the place price is inflated since the place pool only pays out to one betting interest.

It's also important to know that if you bet an exotic, only the top finishing horse of the grouped horses matters in the ticket.

so if you bet a 2-1-7 trifecta

and the real finish is 2-1a-1-7

the 2nd 1 gets tossed for the $ purposes and the final is 2-1-7 and your tri wins.

usually they are called couple. They may have same owner or same trainer. They are a betting entry.
