College Football Playoff announces national title could be decided by forfeit if a team is hit by COVID-19



The playoff said in a statementthat the title game could be moved from Jan. 10 to as late as Jan. 14 if one or both of the semifinal-winning teams were unable to field a team on the scheduled game date. No. 1 Alabama plays No. 4 Cincinnati and No. 2 Michigan plays No. 3 Georgia on Dec. 31


If a team is unable to play in a semifinal because of COVID-19 cases, that game will be forfeited. If two teams from the same semifinal are unable to play because of COVID-19 cases, the winner of the other semifinal will be declared the national champion. If three teams can't play, the team that is available to play on Dec. 31 is the champion.

I understand that there would be no action on a game that isn't played, but what about futures bets on the champion. I would think that would stand when the champion is announced, even if the title game isn't played. Am I wrong?

Right, I mean it seems that the vaccine doesn't prevent it from being present in your body, but does largely prevent you from having significant symptoms or complications from it. So really only benefit from knowing you have it is to make sure you stay away from vulnerable folks -- the unvaxxed and/or the elderly or frail.

• In relation to any tournament, competition or similar: If the event is not completed within 48 hours following the scheduled completion date of the event, then any markets relating to the event will be settled in accordance with the official ruling of the relevant governing body, providing such a decision is given within 90 days after the scheduled completion date. If no official ruling is announced in this 90 day period, then bets on any market relating to this event will be void, except for bets on any markets which have been unconditionally determined. If a market is to be voided but has been part-settled as a courtesy to the Sportsbook customers, then such part-settled bets will be reversed and all bets on the market will be void.

^^ based on that it looks to me that if two teams make the final and one team has to forfeit, futures wagers on the team that doesn't forfeit would cash. Maybe a little extra incentive to take a longshot like Cincinnatti?

I hope this turns into the worst kind of disaster for the screw-up that is college football. If one of the finalists has enough cases where it's right on the edge -- maybe the game should be postponed a few days and maybe it shouldn't -- it opens the door for all kinds of speculation and whether the decision favors one team over the other. It would be great if none of the three playoff games are played and the AP votes Syracuse the national champion.
