Well, now it's time for the PGA Tour to hit the "Florida Swing", starting with The Honda Classic at PGA National, a tough, shot demanding par 70 course in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. We won't see the 20 and 30 Under par scores that we saw out west in Hawaii, Arizona and California. This course will probably see a winning score between 7 and 10 Under by the time Sunday rolls around. The course will demand staying straight and "in play". There is very little recovery for errant shots. We will see many more bogie scores this week than we have in previous weeks. The key for the player is to not get frustrated and stay cool and calm. Easier said than done for some of these guys, so I gathered up three players who I think have the mental fortitude to win this event, here they are:
Brooks Koepka +1800. We may as well call him "Mr. Cool", he has nerves of steel and there isn't anything that shakes this guy, not even a double bogie, and he just keeps grinding knowing full well he is going to make a run at some point. Best iron play on tour so far which is what it takes at this place. At these odds, he is a must play for me.
Sungjae Im +1200. He loves this course, it fits his style, and he shot every round last year in the upper 60's at this event. How he didn't win is beyond me, but he has the best chance this year of any golfer in the field. Even the books have this guy installed as the fav to win it, and I won't argue. I'll bite at 12-1.
Charles Howell III +6600 This guy is my long shot play. He took last week off after shooting decent at Pebble Beach, and he usually plays at Riviera, which tells me he's aimed at this one. Really super straight off the tee, decent iron play and a good enough putter to maybe steal this one if this goes right. I'm giving "Chuckie 3 Stick" an outside shot at this.
There 's my three. I'll have matchup plays going throughout the following days as usual. Have fun and let's hope one of these guys can bring it home.
