Brian Griese is joining the San Francisco 49ers as the team's quarterbacks coach, a source confirmed to The Athletic. He is replacing Rich Scangarello, who left the 49ers to become the offensive coordinator for the University of Kentucky.
Griese, 46, spent 11 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback, playing for the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He won the Super Bowl during the 1998 season, serving as the Broncos backup quarterback behind John Elway. Griese finished his NFL career with 19,440 yards and 119 touchdown passes to 99 interceptions.
After his playing days, Griese transitioned to broadcasting, working for ESPN as an analyst for the network's college football coverage. In 2020, Griese joined the Monday Night Football crew.
The 49ers finished with a 10-7 record in 2021, advancing to the NFC Championship before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.
