Problem with Radio Shack was shitty management
They had too many brick and mortar stores, too much inventory,'
Radio Shack was doing great, especially in cell phones and cell hone parts until around 1998 or so.
Thar's when the rest of the brick and mortar retail stores shifted big time to online, at that time EBAY was king.
Everybody else was going 50/50 brick and mortar and online, Radio Shack was complacent, smug, thought they didn't need it.
Long story short, they went belly up and stuck with like a gazillion dollars of inventory.
You know who almost screwed themselves pretty much the same way?
IBM
True story, I started out on an IBM 3090 mainframe years ago, we all saw that develop before out eyes.
Early 90's the I/T world began gravitating to the micro computers, the desktops.
Apple was hitting full stride around then.
IBM wouldn't budge. "We're IBM, Big Blue, we're fine, we can't be bothered with micros"
Well, somebody high up in corporate said "we better adapt or we'll be swallowed up"
IBM finally entered the pc world, just in time too.
They still couldn't be bothered and handed the pc side of business to Lenovo.
What IBM got right was the mainframe.
The rest of the IT world was saying the IBM mainframe is a dinosaur, they said that in 1992, and they're still say that in 2022.
Thing about the mainframe is it's a huge corporate business computer, heavy retail, insurance, banking, etc. applications get processed on them.
Customer information files too large for most other corporate computers to maintain relied heavily on CICS (IBM software)
That's where IBM made their money, and their printers and other peripherals.Comment -
