That's what you get for crowding the plate and leaving the Dodgers!

Red Sox star Justin Turner just got drilled in the face by a pitch during a spring training game ... and the blow was so violent, it left him oozing blood at homeplate.

Ever get a cut on your scalp or face? Bleeds like crazy. Mostly skin and bone, so blood is right on top - reason why your skull is harder than the hardest of rocks. Just ask any brain surgeon what it's like drilling through a skull. I remember ripping a chunk from my lip before my Freshman prom with my brand-new Mach3 machete, I mean razor. Had to burn it shut to stop the bleeding - still get made fun of about it 20 years later. Also, fun fact - the "face" as it is defined medically, and neurologically, runs to the top of your head. Everyone assumes it ends at the hairline, because that's how we culturally define the "face." So at least 50% of JJ's face, wasn't so bad. Anyhow, hope it just whacked mostly his forehead, split it open, lot of blood, but he'll be fine. God Bless!

Yea I was thinking about that after seeing it. Was at a restaurant the other day and they had the Phil's game on, right handed pitcher rushed two straight and both were up and in to a righty, right by his head. I'd imagine that's the miss if you're rushing to deliver a pitch.

I don't buy it. Tons of sports are based on being quick to produce quality.
NBA and NHL come to mind. You're standing on a slab, you grip the ball and throw it. If you can't do that you'll be in the minors pretty quickly.

The pitch clock will be blamed for everything now because guys don't have enough time to adjust their gloves, take 5 practice swings, step out of the plate 3 times, adjust their jock strap twice, spit their chew tobacco and look at the dugout 6 times for the signs.

I’m guessing you’ve never played baseball, or even maybe beer league softball? Pitcher always has cart Blanche to take as much time as needed. Let alone at the highest level - these guys have been conditioned to their routine for decades - you think it’s that easy to change, essentially overnight, with a clock winding down in your face? NFL teams still can’t avoid delay of game penalties, and they’ve had decades to get used to it.

Those two sports are meant to be fluid, completely different from baseball. Again, I’m assuming you’ve never actually played or even looked into it. Which is fine, but to lump it into those two is just ignorance.

Pitchers and batters played quickly for over 100 years without any problems. Any problems will be because the players don't want to, not because they can't; they'll adjust.

Yes, Pro wrestling thrives on this. I remember Jim Ross sensationalizing a bloody match saying, "He's busted open from ear to ear", when in actuality it was a small strategically placed razor cut that bled a lot.

If you are a pitcher in the Majors and you can't throw a pitch without hitting a batter you are incompetent.
I've played low level ball and there was no "pre drama" for the thrower of the hitter.
They threw and we had to try and hit it. Very fluid but quick.

I've played low level ball and there was no "pre drama" for the thrower of the hitter.
They threw and we had to try and hit it. Very fluid but quick.

How you don’t understand that rushing someone to throw a ball that will break someone’s face…when they haven’t had to rush their whole life doesn’t change things then that’s beyond me

Let alone at an MLB level where these guys are flamethrowers

Pitcher always has cart Blanche to take as much time as needed. Let alone at the highest level - these guys have been conditioned to their routine for decades - you think it’s that easy to change, essentially overnight, with a clock winding down in your face? NFL teams still can’t avoid delay of game penalties, and they’ve had decades to get used to it.
About 10 years ago I read an analytics article that showed a correlation between the time a pitcher takes in between pitches and his ability to maintain velocity. The more rest between pitches, the more the velocity holds up. Certain franchises (like Tampa) were teaching pitchers to slow down and gaining an advantage. Now virtually every franchise has caught on and is/was teaching the same.

To my knowledge there wasn't an uptick in batters getting hit in the face when pitchers changed their rhythm to pitch at a slower pace, so I wouldn't expect an increase now that the clock is forcing them to pitch faster. If there was an unusal factor that lead to Turner's injury I think it might be that pitchers are "rusty" at the beginning of spring training.

Just my opinion... hopefully we won't see any more accidents like Turner's.
