Unless you're a Randy Johnson or a Roger Clemens most catchers/pitching coaches/managers start off batters with breaking balls or sliders on an 0-0 count.
Reason being most batters are looking to barrel up on a first pitch heater.
Look it up, I believe Weinstein Baseball has all the numbers.
First pitch strikes, or 0-1 counts if you will, result in an out 92 percent of the time, a strike out 69 percent of the time.
Conversely, first pitch balls result in a walk 70 percent of the time.
I'm real big on analytics and sabermetrics but I also played the game.
I'm a hybrid, I was taught by old school, hard core old tiimers, so I do believe the manager at times should throw out the book and go by his gut, play the hunch, let the power hitter who can't hit lefties for shit if he's been on tear lately face that lefty.
You know, throw out the book and let the better who is streaking to get in there, regardless.
Baseball is a game of threes, I get that, but it's also a game of firsts.
First pitch, first out, first run scored...
The 0-0 count, the first pitch to the batter is critical.
There's studies of thousands and thousands of first pitch strikes that prove this out.
