I know what the term means, but the term is subjective.
In ten words or less the term means to earn enough money to cover all of life's necessaries.
b) You mentioned that you don't know how to calculate certain statistics.
What exactly is giving you trouble?
I'm an IT operation's analyst by trade, I work for a life insurance company. I deal with actuaries all the time, maybe I can be of some assistance.
I know folks that earn 200k a year and don't live comfortably for several reasons.
They're mortgage is too high for instance.
The rule of thumb has been and still is your rent/mortgage can't exceed 40% of your budget.
And even at say 35%, that's still too high.
What's your food budget?
Some must have filet even though they really can't afford it.
I'm a firm believer of "it's not how much you earn, it's how much you keep".
I'm not a high roller, hardly, I don't even pretend to be.
I'm 'just' a 40/80/120 bettor.
A 5* bomb to me is 200 dollars, there are some gamblers that play dimes and consider 200 chump change.
Don't care what others consider, I'm perfectly fine gambling the way I do, I've been in the game for decades, and haven't come remotely close to tapping out.
I'm not a professional gambler, but I do treat it as more than a hobby, I do the research and homework before sending in my eighty-dollar wager, but that's the nature of the beast, I play to win, and I want every advantage I can get. I don't throw darts.
I consider sports betting more like a side hustle, a way to augment my earnings, since I don't make sports betting my primary source of income, I can't consider myself a 'professional, but I'm not a novice either.
To answer your question, yes you can make a living doing this, but a recent study I read is that roughly eight percent that bet sports do.
Look in the mirror and ask yourself and answer truthfully, are you or can you be in that upper eight percent class?
Sports betting is a lot like poker, it just takes a day to learn it, but a lifetime to master it.
I hope this helps.Comment -

#79I didn't read all the responses but I believe you can. I've been in an out of the game since my early 20s. Have I made a living, no. But had I been more disciplined and stayed away from some of the vices that clouded my judgement i definitely would be further ahead. Even now I don't know all the ins &outs and I don't put all my time into this but I believe there's many angles in which one can find an ave that would translate into making a living. Not saying it's easy. Discipline is definitely needed but I believe it can be done.Comment -

#86Time is very important. If you have a regular job and you work 40 hrs per week and you make $150,000 per year will you work 40 hrs per week as a professional gambler to make $150,000 year or would you need to work more hours? Then it's the other benefits you miss like, paid vacation, paid health insurance, promotions, 401k, etc. How much more will you need to make as a professional gambler to pay from own pocket for these benefits?Comment -

#88Using any type of gambling as an escape from depression is not a good idea. If you are winning, then everything is great but what if you lose and bury yourself? Then you will slide into a deeper depression.Comment -

#91Well no one wants me as an apprentice and I used to do drugs.I smoked and I had no hobby1,my parents made sure of that and I had no one to guide me.I was Also suicidal and my mom hospitalized me into a psych ward.
Can I make sport betting as a hobby1 ore should I get a job and pretend that everything îs fine?
Everything you mentioned here is not going to prevent you from succeeding, even if your hinting of some kind of criminal record, or trouble.Comment -
#92It's harder to beat now more than ever... The market is sharper with the influx of more gamblers, more talking heads, more syndicates. There's just a lot more information on the table and it's almost always baked into the number.
The market moves a lot faster now too. You used to be able to wait until midweek before there were any significant changes to football lines, but the number is blood in the water to piranhas, and a there's not much meat on the bone left by midweek. The sharps are attacking as soon as the line drops Sunday afternoon for the following week's games.Comment -
#93The answer is NO.

#95Get a job any job even if you dont like it. You need income. No one without a huge roll can be sucessful at this while still using that same money to survive. BTJ claims he does and good for him but i dont think its sustainable.
If your serious about gambling and have good math skills with no ADHD. Learn to count cards. Blackjack will be way more profitable if you can find beatable games in your area. By beatable i mean 8 deck deck shoes with less then 2 deck penetration.
Buy the book ken uston million dollar blackjack. People will tell u 3 point system is outdated and not needed. THEY ARE FOOLS. Read it twice. Learn to count down a deck in less then 60 seconds. Get a blackjack simulator and put in about 50 hours before spending any real Money. Make sure you understand Risk of Ruin... IMO much easier then trying to beat the books.
You also get better perks you can travel more eat and stay free at casinos free shows etc. Just make sure you arent spending too much time at any one casino.Last edited by biggie12; 02-16-24, 07:28 PM.Comment -

#100Can cap your ass off and find a bet you really like and think can win every few days. Bet it for a good amount of money to start off. Double up then after, rinse and repeat for 10 straight doubling up bet wins.
Cash out, rape the books then retire. Sail off into the sunset, live happily ever after and never gamble again. Mission accomplished!

I can sail off into the sunset tomorrow if I wanted too. When you get older and have money you don't have the young balls to sail off into the sunset and never look back.
I got properties and business stuff I have to look after. Locked down
