Used to see this twice a night at every hockey game back in the day. Now it’s all but extinct. Chalk it up to the pussyfication of sports.

They both landed a few good ones but their shoulder pads took an absolute beating.

Probert, Boogard, Kordic, Ewen and others all dead before 50, suffering with the effects of brain damage before their early demises. If you don't want more to die torturous deaths for a sideshow on skates, you are apparently, a pussy.

Fortunately the NHL sees it differently.

                    Dave Schultz is still alive.
                    Chris Milan is still alive.
                    Tie Domi is still alive.
                    Tony Twist is still alive.
                    Rob Ray is still alive.
                    Tiger Williams is still alive.
                    Joey Kocur is still alive.
                    Terry O'Reilly is still alive.

That's pretty much a whose who of NHL greatest fighters excluding probert.

They are all above 50 and just fine.

Bob Probert was a drug addict and an alcoholic. That's how he died. John kordic died from a lung failure due to a heart malfunction which was caused in part due to drug abuse and steroids.

that's a tremendous list but you are leaving out two of the best who ever did. both 6'5" and north of 200 lbs each.

                      Dave Brown and Stu Grimson.

Tony Twist and Rob Ray were beasts.

McSorley could really take a punch.

Kocur was amazing too, especially for a smaller guy.

Yes Grimson and Brown were good as well. I also forgot Wendell Clark. He destroyed McSorley in 93 in the west finals. You remember that fight?

yes, someone (maybe mcsorley) took a run at sweet dougie gilmour and then wendel clark came in. it was a good fight. wendel got him w a nice shiner but marty could really take a punch and he stood in there.

wendel a very underrated fighter especially for being a smaller guy like kocur. tie domie takes the cake for very small guys who could hold their own. barnaby also.

Rempe Lost a tough tilt vs Olivier tonight.

they are lining up one by one to take on the rookie.

                              he is only 21yo.

they had better get him right now because in 3-4 years when he's more experienced and about 15 lbs heavier, he is going to be a major problem for these other brawlers in the league.

The hockey fights are part of the game as the fans like them. Reminds me of gladiator fights in Ancient Rome. Give people a show to watch and they will forget they are poor and have nothing to eat.

Probert had CTE, which, among other things, causes impulsive behavior and lack of inhibition. It's very common for people with CTE to develop drug addictions because of these symptoms.

His family noticed severe mental and emotional decline in his early 40s. This brain damage he was proven to have was not caused by alcohol or drugs, it was caused by repeatedly getting hit in the head. Kordic's brain was never tested, but he exhibited many of the same symptoms as Probert before his early death.

Listing hockey goons who have not exhibited symptoms of cte is like listing cigarette smokers who have never suffered health consequences. Just because some people don't have symptoms doesn't mean that either activity isn't physically destructive.

Your first post was about guys dying before 50 and you came up with a few. I gave a list of the greatest fighters in NHL history and how they are all above 50 and most of them well above.

Probert was most definitely a drug addict and an alcoholic. He drank cases of beer at a time in his teenage years and on from there. It certainly wasn't helping him. Alcohol causes damage to the brain. It exacerbated his decline.

yup and most are really good guys in general and most of the time they followed "the code".'

kinda crazy to follow a code w all of that adrenaline cursing through one's veins.

Alcohol does not cause chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

My first post referenced nhl goons who showed symptoms of cte and died early. Listing fighters who don't have symptoms of cte doesn't refute the reality of repeated head trauma causing brain damage.

Feel free to have the last word, I have no need to argue this further.

                                            he is only 21yo.

they had better get him right now because in 3-4 years when he's more experienced and about 15 lbs heavier, he is going to be a major problem for these other brawlers in the league.
wow he didn't do too well this fight.

yup, Olivier landed two rights square in the jaw and nose (probably broke his nose) and took the momentum.

Kempe is only 21. very very young to have to scrap like this with older guys in their late 20's who are smaller but more physically mature.
