    Best/Worst Sports Announcers?
    Any sport...

I would say worst is old horseface Bill Walton; I would rather pay someone $20 to kick me in the balls then listen to his rants. Every Bill Walton line starts off with..."In my day..."...In his day he was the only professional basketball player who couldn't get laid.

Best, I would have to say Keith Jackson; good announcer with some classic lines..."The Sophamore"...Was always down to earth with his comments as well although he did miss the Woody Haye's punch in 78'.

    Bryant Gumbel.

Edit : Just to clarify, he is obviously my selection for worst current sports announcer, not that there would be any confusion when his name is mentioned in this capacity.

Probably not too many have heard him, but Rance Mulliniks is my vote. He's a former BlueJay who does their games on Sportsnet up here in the Toronto area. I fully realize you want to support the team you do the play by play for all year, but this guy takes being a "homer" to a whole new (sub)level.

Things I've learned from Rance this year:

*John MacDonald is the best fielding shortstop in the Major Leagues, in fact the best in years...
*Reed Johnson is the best leadoff hitter in the Major Leagues...
*Vernon Wells is the best center fielder in the Major Leagues...
*The BlueJays have the best 5 man rotation in the Major Leagues...
*The BlueJays have the best SS-2B combo in the Major Leagues...
*The BlueJays never give in and are a resilient bunch. He's never said it, but I assume Rance believes like no other team in the Major Leagues...
*The BlueJays are the best team in the Major Leagues...It's just those darn injuries and a heaping portion of bad luck that has them in 3rd place in the AL East, with no chance of post-season, according to the always objective Rance Mulliniks.

I had to listen to McCarver when I watched the METS; he was horrible. Does anyone remember when Deion dumped ice on him in the Braves lockeroom after Timmy said Deion was hurting the team?

Goes to show how one man's pleasure is another man's poison. Absolutely despised watching Joe Thiesman games and was very very happy to hear of his monday night demise!

On a side note, Bill Maas was the absolute worst, and i'm hoping his summer arrest will lead to zero work this season. Anyone hear an update on him?

The worst is the Miami Heat play-by-play guy. I don't know his name and don't feel like looking it up, but listening to his artificial voice on League Pass the last couple years has been painful.

                            McCarver's also horrible.

Kornheiser's quickly jumping up this list with his dreadful performances on MNF. Guy knows nothing about football.

Nice call, Bateman. Keith Jackson was great, although he naturally lost a bit his last couple years. "Whooooa Nelllly," is classic.

I think Jim Lampley does a great job with boxing, although Lennox Lewis and Larry Merchant are terrible.

Sean McDonough's very good in baseball and college foots/hoops.

Ain't that the truth, cobra? I grew up enjoying Gene Elston and Harry Kalas when he first started in the business in Houston. Both are very monotonic, what many would call boring and I understand that breed is dying.

The one thing that would be a great -- And it will never happen -- is to put just one man in the booth and let them call a game. Used to be a great way to listen to or watch a game, when only one voice in the booth dominated the audio. It's one thing to try and relate the play by play and just one story during a half-inning of baseball, for example; but when you have three guys all talking over each other, it's too often unbearable for me.

                                2. James Brown ( He was terrible during March Madness- Give me Gus Johnson anyday).

I actually like Bill Walton. He definitely wouldn't be on my "WORST" board.

Mike Patrick, Verne Lundquist, Kevin Harlan, etc.....they are all good.

I like Bill Walton he is hilarious... He does know his basketball and he is very colorful... I have liked Mike Patrick since 1987 when he and Joe Theisman started with Sunday Night Football.. He does college basketball too and the excitement in his voice is awsome... I really used to look foreward to Sunday Night with my projector and turning up the sound REALLY HIGH when the intro started, the crowd was loud, and he would say "Good evening ladies and gentlemen ....it's great to have ya' with us"...

The others I liked as a kid and still like today are Dick Emberg ("He's all the way down to the 39 yard line... ooooooh myyyyy), Don Crici ("There's a throw and a catch"), and Ron Framklin (There's a timeout on the field so le'ts take it with them)...

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOLY COW WHT A CATCH!!!! Mike P.......

Oh By the way you guys are right Pam Ward is bad...

NY Yankees broadcast team - If you're talking about the radio broadcasters, wow, they're awesome!

How Vin Scully, no one mentioned him.

I really like the Heat play by play guy. Talk about good betting info. There were many times this last season when he called the winner (either the Heat or their opponent) well before the end and I was able to use his opinions to make money in in-game betting. The guy understands basketball.

I don't know why you people like Mike Patrick, every sport he announces he sounds like he's trying to squeeze something out of his ass as he talks. I personally do not care for him at all. And if ESPN learns nothing for the rest of their existence, they should know that Chris Berman was gay about 15 years ago. He's F-ing horrible. Also cannot stand Joe Buck because he feels like it's his job to entertain and interject shit at every point. That's not a play-by-play guy's job. Just shut up and tell me what happened during the last play not your opinion on shit. Leave that up to the crappy color guys.

as far as college football goes...I really like Joe Meyers of FSN...also color guys for ESPN Tim Brant and Andre Ware...Brent Musburger still does a great job...Charles Davis of the Big 10 Network is an excellent color guy as well (just did the Michigan vs. Appy St. game with Tom Brennamen who's a good play by play guy)...Ron Franklin does an excellent job on Saturday nights and Todd Blackledge is really growing on me...Vern Lunquist is just OK in my opinion, he usually does the Saturday afternoon SEC game...Dan Fouts is pretty average too...Trevor Maddich and Rod Gilmore really piss me off with their arguments on the Friday night ESPN game, geez...I like Pat Hayden doing color for the Notre Dame games, he does a good job...Pam Ward is just terrible...

No one can call a baseball game like Bob Costas.

Billy Packer is so fuucking biased and stubborn its unreal.

As far as football is concerned, Matt Millen USED to be the best color commentator before he bacame the worst GM in the history of NFL.

I get to listen to him for all of the Brewer games.

Gus Johnson doing a March Madness game is outstanding. He should be doing the Final Four over Nantz

I like Brent Musberger by far the most. I also like Gary Danielson, Verne Ludquist, Todd Blackledge, Chris Fowler, Andre Ware.....

The worst, and by far, was the old Sunday Night NFL crew with M.Patrick, J. Theisman, and P. MaGuire. They were just horrible. Billy Packer is not very good either....way past his prime.
