Low Cost (or no cost) business ideas
I'm looking to start a very low cost or no cost small business up part time. I'll be in new york city for the next year starting in September so looking for something that I can do without a car in the city. Not going to be a food vendor. Shoot some ideas. Good ones get points.

If you are handy with fixing appliances & other odd jobs, you can just post ads on Craigslist for free. Or if you are handy with fixing cars, people always need good mechanics. You don't even need all the fancy equipment to rebuild motors & shit like that...but something simple like offering cheap brake jobs & oil changes will get people's attention. Even if you only take $20 profit on a job, you only need to do 5 a day to make $100, not too bad in my book. And once word of mouth spreads about your good work, your potential income can go through the roof.

Buy a shit load of vuvuzelas(sp?), those annoying noise makers from the world cup and sell em at sporting events for 5 bucks a pop. you could personalize them with Yankees/knicks/jets/giants colors and stickers and shit

You should use your mouth as a sex shop or open a travel agency.

I can play music but I'm pretty sure you need a permit for that, same with the vuvuzuelas, and MLB ballparks don't allow them inside anymore after the Marlins fiasco a few weeks ago. I like this though, lets keep it flowing.

Good idea, but I have seen at least 3 pop up in my neighborhood. One of them used to be a driving school and 2 polish dudes rented it out and business is booming because everybody speaks polish I guess.

I personally want to start a website of all the crazy shit I see in this city day in and day out. I see some strangeeee people and strangeee things. Other day I was driving, stopped at the red light and I look to my left and there just a ******* tv sitting on the median next to the stop light. Like how the **** did a tv get there? I think people would laugh at this shit.

Go live in or near a resort town, where rich people live part of the year. Offer to look after their homes when they're not living there. You know, water the garden, make sure everything is safe, maybe feed some pets, simple stuff. Shoot for about 25 houses. Do a great job, and let word of mouth do the rest. If things go well, hire people to do the same.

you can do personla tutoring if you can speak some foreign language, or computer tutoring, it's usually pretty costly for customers and good for you, I used used to advertise on the newspapers English tutoring(I live in the Ukraine) and I've had a few good students each year

Don't know what instrument you play, you could offer music lessons, and here's the catch, you teach at the students house rather than have them come to you. You charge more the convenience of personal instruction in the comfort of the student's home. You could also offer instrument repair if you have some knowledge in that area.

isn't it obvious. establish yourself in a sports bar and take nfl bets on sundays only there in person. do it discreetly and the bar won't care because you will be drawing in customers who want to bet but don't want to play offshore. and you of course will make money because everyone thinks they know something about football when all they will do is bet favorites and overs and lose in the long run.

That could work. Then I'm pocketing a very small change though, like a couple dollars per transaction, although it is free money I suppose. Not sure how I would establish contacts with these people and let it be known I'm taking bets. Plus I don't have much in terms of muscle/tracking a guy down, so I could easily be SOL unless they pay me upfront, which nobody would ever do.

advertise to all the new yorkers that you will sell their shit they don't want. you'd be surprised how many people wanna sell stuff but don't wanna take the time to ebay it. i advertise on craigslist here and do it for people.

So far one of the top ideas. What do you guys think of an apartment finding business? I mean I guess thats what brokers do, but I would be way cheaper and just look at apartments for these people.

Find some restaurants that participate with restaurant.com and offer good value. Buy their certificates when they are 80% off ( normally $25 off costs $10, you want them for $2).

Hang out in the parking lot and sell them to people walking in for $10. If you could sell 5 an hour that is $40 / hour cash profit. Management might try to run you off, but I don't think you could arrested unless they first get you warned for trespassing....even then if you are off their property I think you are OK.
