Please post your favorites here. Here's three that you may have never heard of but I recommend:



Toby, Jude, and Casey are four college friends who become small-time bookies, merging their diverse talents in setting up computerized spreadsheets, taking the bets and making the collections. But despite their mutual vows about discretion, their indulgences and party-hardy lifestyle soon attract attention from the local mob bookmaker, whose turf they've invaded.



Carolyn Carver is a writer with a gambling addiction that threatens to destroy her marriage and family. She meets a washed-up magician who promises that he can help. Meanwhile, Godfrey Snow is a star college basketball player who shaves points to help his brother, Clyde, get even. A small-time bookie tries to win over the love his life, Veronica. Victor, a sadistic criminal, attempts to control an uncontrollable world. All the while Detective Brunner follows the trail of a mysterious death.



A lone gunman stalks a sold-out crowd at a championship football stadium. The sports betting part is just a sub-plot but it's brilliant and this is one of the best sports movies I've seen.

I've heard many here mention Bookies, and I too agree it is a good one (I loved the scene with the mob-like guy intimidating the future degenerate in the bathroom).

I've never even heard of the last two, but will definitely check them out. Thanks a heap for the recommendations, as I love well made gambling movies!

Two that I would suggest that many haven't seen are:



Clive Owen is a struggling writer who returns to casino work, and quickly gets hooked on watching punters lose night after night. Some great scenes in this movie that are pretty accurate about long term losers, and Clive Owen is cool as a cucumber raking in money for the casino night and again. As a former casino worker and manager I can tell you MUCH of this is true for most employees.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's best work bar none. Most here have probably seen it, but it centers around a bank executive who embezzles more and more to feed his gambling addiction. At one point he even gets out of debt and goes up millions, but you can guess where that goes. He even gets so desperate as to call bookies and tell them he wants every home team in the National League and every away team in the American. Minnie Driver plays a great spouse who is pushed to the brink by this psychological addiction. Great movie that really highlights the ultimate depths to which a degenerate will go...

You've never seen a good gambling/con movie til you've seen Diggstown. By far the best of all of these. One of the best movies I've ever seen. The ending is unbelievable!!!!!!

I just read a book about Jack Molinas. I don't remember ever seeing a movie about him, but man, is there a lot of material. Big-time fixer in the late 1950's and early 60's.

Also, the recent movie with Pacino and McConaghey was interesting at times, can't remember the name of it.

I saw Croupier a couple of months ago on some cable station. It was so-so, I can't even really remember the plot details, but I did manage to sit through it.

Let it ride is a Classic!!! Everytime I watch, I keep saying I'M HAVING A VERY GOOD DAY loudly over and over for the next few weeks.

The Sting is an all-time favorite of mine.

The Gambler - far and away the best gambling movie ever made.

The Croupier - not only the worst gambling movie ever made, quite possibly the WORST MOVIE EVER MADE. Can someone who thought this piece of trash was actually good, please explain to me: In the scene where he's the black jack dealer and they rob him, why did the robbers have to bring him into the plot??? They could have robbed any blackjack dealer - they didn't need someone on the inside.

I saw it about 10 years ago, so I can't remember the exact details (as much as I'd like to I can't wipe the whole movie out of my memory). But I remember this was one of many moronic plot lines in the film.

"The Grifters" was also idiotic. What about the scene where they keep loading up on the horse and his odds keep going up and up and up? I guess no one ever explained to the filmmakers the concept of parimutal betting.
