Movie Slapshot a good movie? What a great time in the 70's to play minor league hockey
I grew up as a kid watching the 3 Carlson brothers play high school hockey ,two of which were the Hanson Brothers in the movie Slapshot. The 3rd brother Jack who had cement hands and couldn't skate was playing with Edmonton and couldn't be in the movie???He was the biggest goon enforcer of all the Carlson brothers and that's the only reason he was able to play in the NHL.

I thought it was a great sports comdey movie,am I right on that one or am I biased? There were some great lines in that movie and not a minute or two went by without some stupid humor making you laugh. It's sad to watch that movie and see how spry and smooth voiced Paul Newman was even at an elderly age compared to now wherethe guy looks like he's on the kicking the bucket list.

I guess this is a true story where Miller Beer a few years ago hired the Hanson Brothers to go to hockey related shows-card signing etc.and the line to get their autographs was longer than to get Mario Lemioux's and such.

Out of all the eras to be in any pro or minor league sports I think the 70's for minor league hockey would have been the most fun.It was before it was mandatory to work out allot and guys drank beer on road trips in the busses etc.On any given night players would get in fights in the stands and not get into too much trouble.Sure,it was bush league but it had to be a blast.

I hear the stories almost everyday. My Finance Manager at work was in Slapshot, he played Andre Lussier "The Poodle". He tells me in took 10 days to shoot the last part of the movie where the Bulls come out as all goons.

Some of the interesting facts are, Newman had a body double, but hardly used him, he could skate, although it took some time for him to warm up. The stands were never filled, they used to move the fans to different parts of the arena for filming. Olgalthorpe was the brother of one of the screenwriters.

He tells the stories of the fights with the fans, the women, booze, just a bunch of guys who could skate playing the game they love.

I agree, playing minor league hockey in the 70's must have been a blast, I've heard first hand the stories and I wish I could have lived some of them

As with many tv and movie stars that think they hold great artistic and social importance,I heard that Paul Newman is embarrassed that he did Slapshot and won't even talk about it.Max Baer jr.the guy who played Jethro I guess is the same where he gets ticked off if someone meets him and brings up the Jethro character.Entertainers sure have thin skins and they should be honored that people got a laugh and thought the characters they played, corny and hokey as they may have been brought joy to people.

Slapshot is one of my top 20 movies of all time. It just takes me to a great place everytime. That's disappointing if what you're saying about Paul Newman is true. He ought to feel 10X that way about the Color of Money then...

I love the movie, and Hockey.....My twin brother and I have played rugby on the same team and they nicknamed us the hansons. Rugby is still the same with the drinking etc.....very fun, even if you dont play find your local rugby club and go watch them play on Saturdays and go hang out with them at the bar, it is great fun.
