59 years old. 1,000 more people out of work in Vegas. North end of the strip is becoming a ghost town.

#2thats a shame, I used to enjoy their poker tournies and they always had $5 //bj tables. 1000 jobs is lot that really sucksComment -
#3its a jungle out there
or should i say a desertComment -

Unemployment rate in Vegas is around 14%....so this certainly won't help the numbers. Lots of businesses in the Sahara also will probably shutdown like the NASCAR cafe etc. I think was in there.Comment -

#6more surprised a place like circus circus hasn't closed 1st.
Sahara was in a bad spot, that end of the strip is scary nowComment -
#7Sahara had more hookers in the lobby than guests these days..real bad location.Comment -
#8Sucks for the people that worked there.
Almost impossible for a building that old to be competitive in the environment of the "new" Vegas....especially on the Strip.
I hate to see this, but this is the cost of progress. Still, makes me a little sad.....Comment -

Opie I agree....the land is probably worth more for development. Same thing is going on in CA with horse racing at Hollywood Park. Racing is losing money, and the owners want the land to develop....it's sucks, but it's the cost of keeping upComment -
#10The Sahara allowed itself to become a run down dump, as far as their rooms were concerned. Vegas is changing from a gambling town to a resort city where gambling is allowed. There is a huge difference there. Before gaming profits were the main source of income for the hotels. Now the hotels have to make a profit in every aspect of their operation, or they go under.Comment -
#11Dang when I went there for my bachelor party it was the go to place for the cheap buffet.Comment -
#12I really liked that place, had one of the last "old vegas" type of vibes and great deals to be had if you were on a budget. Someone will build a brand new shiny palace there as that end of the strip will soon look like the other. Circus Circus can't hold out much longer with all the space available around them.Comment -
#13That part of the Strip never really took off and left them on an island almost by themselves. Bad area where tourists never felt safe.Comment -
-
#15that sucks i have stayed there and liked it but it was too far outComment -
#16had some good times at the saharaComment -
#17It was the last original hotel left on the strip. Sad to see it go.Comment -
#18Riviera, Tropicana, Circus-Circus, Imperial Palace still there...But they're dumps also. Sahara had a Leroys sports book too. Shittiest book in town. Had to wait for approval on $100 play. Nascar cafe did pretty well during football season, good crowds and nice drinks prizes, but the place did need some work. Casino had that old Vegas feel to it. Feel bad for all those people, it's really getting grim here guys. Unemployment rate went down, but that was due to people that quit collecting unemployment or left.Comment -
#19Sad to see another icon go down. Feel bad for all those that are losing their jobs.Comment -

also Riveria would close before Circus Circus in my humble opinion ..

Plus That Irish spot and Casino Royal offer pretty much the same low limit tables that these dinosaurs do and they are in the Central Strip!!
Yeah.. it was to bad they didn't try to reinvent themselves.. the old school vibe is cool... but you have to keep it classy.. Tropicana is fully remodeling there hotel and it will still have a old school vibe.. but it will at least have everything new...Comment -
#21How the fukk is the Luxor still in businessComment -
#22Too bad this didn't work out. I hope the economy starts getting better there.Comment -

#24God Vegas has changed for the worse.
I remember when the Mirage was state of the art, now it's mediocre at best.
I miss the Slipper, Stardust, DI for golf..................
Used to get my golf comped at the DI.Comment -

#26Vegas was much better in 80's when I first started going thereComment -
#27went to vegas for the first time last week glad i got to see it before its goneComment -
#28That end of the strip is becoming useless. Circus Circus and Stratosphere are in jeopardy, along with Riveria. Anything north of Wynn, with the exception of the LV Hilton because of the Convention Center and Sportsbook is not a destination anymore. First the Desert Inn then Stardust and Westward Ho dies, then Frontier...... now Sahara.Comment -
#29Too many Elvis impersonators, that's what is killing 'ol Vegas! They're everywhere, flood'in the place, I mean come on, an Asian Elvis?Comment -
#30It is always sad when old vegas dies. I saw the Checkmates there many years ago.Comment -
#31its all about luxury resort hotels now, everywhere not just vegas, anywhere in the u.s. you are withing a fw hours of a casino, it might be an indian casino and very low end but once you are at the tables its the same
the encore is bad ass and everyone should stay there witho9ut considering anything elseComment -

#33what a shame. i pitched something like 22 tents there in the lobby this past decadeComment -
#34Tough loss for all the people who worked there. The place is a dump compared to the other Hotels.Comment -
#35
Sahara is an abject depressing sh*thole. I'll be elated to see that place razed.Comment
