The dugouts are partially dug into the ground (below ground level) so that is pretty much why they are called dugouts.

But then why ... are graves called graves?

(graven = to dig in Dutch).

Why do people keep walking in and out of the dugouts?

As far as why it's used in baseball, the most plausible story I've ever heard originates in NYC at the old Polo Grounds. Just behind the warm-up area for the pitchers were some stock pens.

As far as where the term originated period, have you ever been to a rodeo or around a cattle ranch?

The other choice for a name was sunflower seed litter area so they went with the dugout.

Why do you drive on a parkway but park on a driveway?

If you remember the scene in 'Fast Times in Ridgemont High' where Jennifer Jason Leigh loses her virginity, you will know why it is called a dugout...

Way back when Abner Doubleday invented baseball he formed a team and on the team was a guy named Doug that really stunk as a ball player. Not to make Doug feel bad that he was an odd man out in front of all the fans,he made a box to hide him and forever after it was called a dugout. He started calling it a dougout but it hurt doug's feelings so he put it down on paper as a dugout. Not only did the dugout hide Doug,it also served as a shelter for when he did get in the game and stunk to be protected from angry fans throwing Cracker Jack boxes full of rocks at him.

As for a bull pen being called a bull pen, here goes.On a stud farm when one bull has blown his wad and is spent, they have a pen with other bulls that come in and do the deed. When a pitcher has blown his arm's wad and is spent,it's time to call in one of the other pitchers from an enclosed area.

Have you ever driven on the New Jersey Garden State Parkway? Trust me, the name fits here.
