Howard Lederer Apologizes For His Role In Full Tilt Poker Fiasco

Full Tilt Poker’s player pool was fully integrated into PokerStars on May 17 and the poker platform was officially retired. In the wake of the final closure of what was once one of the largest online poker sites in the world Howard Lederer, a former board member of the now defunct business, has opted to put out a statement through Daniel Negreanu’s poker blog.

    Howard Lederer

I am writing to apologize to everyone in the poker community, especially to all the players who had money on Full Tilt Poker on April 15, 2011. When Full Tilt Poker closed in 2011, there was a shortfall in funds, a distressed sale to recover those funds, and a long delay in repaying players. Throughout this period, there was little explanation for the delay, and no apology. Players felt lied to. They trusted the site, and they trusted me, and I didn’t live up to that trust.
I take full responsibility for Full Tilt’s failure to protect player deposits leading up to Black Friday. The shortfall in player deposits should never have happened. I should have provided better oversight or made sure that responsible others provided that oversight. I was a founder in the company that launched Full Tilt, and I became the face of the company’s management in the poker community. Many of our players played on the site because they trusted me.
Even though I was no longer overseeing day to day operations, my inattention in the two years leading up to Black Friday imperiled players’ deposits. My involvement in Full Tilt from 2003-2008 put me in a unique position of trust—a trust that I disappointed by failing to ensure that Full Tilt was properly governed when I stepped away in 2008. My failure to make sure proper oversight was in place when I left resulted in the situation that began to unfold on Black Friday. Players were not able to get their money back for a minimum of a year and a half, and, for many, it has been much longer. I’ve been a poker player my entire adult life. I know the importance of having access to one’s bankroll. The lost opportunity, frustration, and anxiety many of FTP’s customers experienced in the intervening years is unacceptable. I cannot be sorry enough for what happened.
During Full Tilt’s rise, I received a lot of praise. I couldn’t see it at the time, but I let the headlines change me. In the first couple of years after Black Friday I made lots of excuses, to my friends, my family and myself, for why I wasn’t the bad guy or big-headed or wrong. In the months immediately following the crisis, I focused a lot of energy on trying to refute allegations that were factually untrue. I convinced myself that I was a victim of circumstance and that criticism was being unfairly directed toward me instead of others. I was missing the bigger picture.
At a wedding in the fall of 2014, I was sitting with a friend, talking about Full Tilt. I was grumbling about how unfair my lot in life had become. My friend didn’t let me off the hook. I’m paraphrasing here, but he said, “Howard, it doesn’t matter whether you knew about the shortfall or what you did to help players get paid. These players feel like you lied to them. You were the face of the company in the poker community. Thousands of players played on the site because they trusted you. Many pros represented the site because they thought you were in control. And you happily accepted the accolades while falling short of their trust.”
At the time, my friend’s response felt like a slap in the face, but it is clear to me now that it was fair. An apology is not enough, but it is what I am able to offer to the poker community in the wake of a travesty that I should not have allowed to happen. I am sorry.

What a POS trying to play the Fkn victim card! The "friends" wedding he's talking about in '14 was actually his accomplice Ray Bitar. I'll bet they had a great discussion about what they did to us. POS is getting neck punched if I ever see him around idgaf where it is.

Ray Bitar at his wedding despite avoiding jail time by telling the judge his heart condition was so bad he couldn't do time. Heart good enough to party all Fkn night with the blonde bimbo!

I used to love Full Tilt Poker. Actually finished second in the nightly 50k (fifty-fifty) guaranteed once and third in another 15k guaranteed in the span of three days. Turned a 200 deposit into $11,400 and actually cashed out two $5k checks. Luckily only had about $150 in my account on Black Friday. Always got paid before that.
Howard is a POS. What a non-apology. Can't believe Daniel let him post it on his blog. I love the YouTube clip that's out there somewhere, where Daniel says he'd punch Howard in the face if he had the guts to show up at the wsop. (I may be paraphrasing a bit there)
Makes me miss the good old days of Poker Stars, etc in the U.S. There's basically a casino now within about 200 miles of every place in this country but I can't play poker where I want online?? penetrating government.

Nice run Jay. One of the few positive full tilt stories. You run good

I was lucky? enough to take out 6k for an engagement ring April 1st that year so those fuks only got half my roll there but pretty sure I see it on that blonde hobags jewelry somewhere or maybe on Howard's big fukkin horse caps he calls teeth nowadays

What do you think brought about the apology right now.

                New business venture coming?

If it's any consolation, he once hit the ground after bouncing off of me coming out of the john at the Rio during the wsop a few years back. the dumbass wasn't watching where he was going, head down, and ran right into me as I was going in..... as I saw him, I kind of knew the contact was coming, and instinctively threw up a left forearm shiver (the type I learned in high school as an offensive lineman), caught him just right, and in the words of Rusty Wallace's young go-kart driving nephew, "put him in the wall"!

Sharps, thanks again for another great poker related article.

Even before I read Lederer's statement, I had a sneaky suspicion he was going to deflect some of the blame. Why even make a statement like this years later? I'm sure it has to do with the massive ego that whole family has. Anne is comically disliked by players and dealers; Howard is, well, the smuggled a-hole everyone thinks he is; and Katy tried to cash in one this repulsive family with a book years ago http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/31/bo...of-a-kind.html.

I have zero empathy for the Lederer family, on a professional level. I'm sure this statement came out because Howard has something else coming down the pipeline, or he just wants to play in the WSOP this year. Like always, it's about HIM and not about what he and his lackeys put a lot of poker players through.

Missed that news. Love that this jerk fired two 10k bullets here. Looking over the hand updates I see we might have another situation like Ferguson where we need to forgive and forget since these guys play so bad. I'm no 2-7 expert but I know enough to say Lederer is dead money

Shortly after being eliminated by Benny Glaser, re-entering, and drawing his original seat, Howard Lederer raises from under the gun. Stuart Rutter three-bets to 11,900 from the big blind, Lederer four-bet shoves for 48,700, and Rutter calls.

Both players stand pat and Rutter shows 10 7 6 5 3. Lederer, though, shows 9 8 7 6 4 to win the pot and double up.

                                      Howard Lederer - 102,000
                                      Stuart Rutter - 42,000

4 bet allin and stand pat oop with a dirty 9

Stuart Rutter Doubles Through Howard Lederer

Stuart Rutter raises all in for 29,600 from the cutoff and Howard Lederer reraises all in from the button, isolating the pot.

Both players stand pat and Rutter fans 9 8 6 3 2. Lederer acknowledges defeat, and his hand is shown to be 10 9 5 4 3.

                                      Stuart Rutter - 65,000
                                      Howard Lederer - 25,000

stands pat behind all in opponents pat with 10 9

I don't mind the first hand from my limited cash and tournament 2-7 NL single draw. It depends on the other player. But the second hand is laughable.

I knew this guy planned on showing up at the WSOP after his BS apology.

I misread and had lederer oop. Not so bad I guess but you'll never find me standing pat against a pat all in with the second worse nine you can have. Maybe in triple draw to get them to break on the later streets but not this spot. Perhaps lederer read his soul and deserves some respeck on his name after all?

Seems appropriate to add this classic...

Posted yesterday on another forum, hope it's true

I just saw some punk in a Nascar hat throw his full big gulp at Howard as he was leaving the Rio. It was a direct hit and the kid yelled "Never Forget" before booking it down the street. I tried to take a picture of the mess but Howard stormed off before I could pull out my phone.
