You either love California or you hate it. There's no in between. You're going to pay out the ass to stay. You can't beat Southern California weather, women, things to do and see. Florida and Hawaii are good places to visit but awfully boring to live. There's not much to do in either place once you do the tourist shit. Both places are very transient, very few "good" jobs and everything is imported, including the people. You don't like Hispanics taking over California, well they've already taken over South Florida, so you're not going to like that for sure. You can get by without speaking Spanish in California but it's a necessity in Miami.
Who cares about state income tax if you're going to retire? It's not a big deal once you settle down. It's the damn property tax you have to worried about. Florida and California are relatively cheap but you're going to have to pay this until your death. Texas property taxes are so high they don't need state taxes. They're going to get it out of you one way or another. Try paying 4% on a million dollar home every year.
