Join Hexversi Tourney #8 by Dec 12th. Win up to 2500+ Pts SPECIAL Section for Newbies
There are 3 different ways for you to win 500 Points or MORE.

    #1
. Win the most games(not %) in this Tourney out of anyone on SBR besides myself. blankoblanco won this in the last Tourney with 17 total Wins and HE WON THE WHOLE TOURNAMENT!!!

    #1A.
In this Tourney there will be a SPECIAL for Newbies(anyone besides DanielEspinosa, blankoblanco, Ian, gauchojake, jackpot269, and Las8 will qualify) to win 500 points. If none of the Newbies win a game, I will give 500 points to the Newbie that came closest to winning a COMPLETED game. If any of your opponents should timeout(this is not uncommon in the 1st Round) you will still be credited for the win. Las8 Won this in the last Tournament, with 2 Wins(both legit).

#2. Section Winner Prediction Picks. I will explain this more thoroughly once the Tourney starts. If you tie or beat me, it's worth 1000 points. But if you don't tie or beat me, it's only worth 500 points.
blankoblanco Won this in the last Tournament, and he beat me as well, so he Won the full 1000 Points.

#3. Tourney Winner Prediction. Las8 got this one right in the last Tourney and Won the 500 points. My only rule is, you can't pick me as I will be picking myself. There are now several very strong and well known Othello players in the Othello community that usually play in these Tournaments, including at least 2 that are the #1 Ranked Othello players from their country. So, I am usually no longer the favorite in these Tournaments anymore.

Also, if anyone on SBR should WIN the Tourney you will Win 3000 points. blankoblanco Won this last time as he won the Tournament!!

For new players, to create an account you will need to send itsyourturn.com an email to websupport@itsyourturn.com and tell them that you want to create an account. You can tell them Holden2341 is organizing another Hexversi Tournament and you want to join it. They should get back to you fairly quickly. Please use your SBR name as your username at IYT.

Once you have an account and username created, to sign up for the Tourney, go to Tournament area and click on December 2022 Open Fast #1 Tournamentby Monday, December 12. Find Hexversi and check the box and click submit down below. And you'll be good to go.

For newbies, or anyone else, you can practice on this CPU in this link below.

    http://meta-site.net/hexlo/?fbclid=I...xXgSGPufKWHqTE

OR you can practice on the app below.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...xagonalreversi

Also, starting on page 5 in this thread in the link below, I start giving "Lessons" on strategy tips. I'm sure most of it will sound rather confusing if you are brand new to the game. But, if you play enough games on the CPU and you want to learn some strategy, I recommend reading the lessons in the link below from pages 5 and on. There's a few on page 4 I think as well, but from page 5 and on it's mostly lessons. (Edit: I am just realizing now, if you start on page 5, there is a lot of lingo that I use, much of that I made up specific for Hexversi and some of it is Othello lingo. Your best bet is to start at post #117 on page 4, I THINK that is the first lesson. If you start from the first lesson I go over the lingo a bit I THINK. Anyway, if anyone has any questions about the lingo, like WTF does this mean? Let me know.)

    https://www.sportsbookreview.com/for...ewbies-p5.html

I am requesting that everyone that joins this Tourney to give me 1 point in this post. This is simply so I can keep track of who has joined.

The Tournament will start on Tuesday, December 13th. I am hoping for at least 40 players or so to sign up. The last Tournament had 39 players, so I expect about the same for this one. I haven't done any recruiting yet on IYT or on Facebook, but I will do that over the next few days or so.

Hexversi is a very simple game that ANYONE can learn in a couple of minutes or less. I recommend watching the minute and a half Othello(same rules) instructional video below if you want to know ALL the rules. If anyone has any questions, let me know in this thread.

    Good luck!

Thanks buddy! I can hardly believe it but the stars seemed to align. I was lucky I never had to play against John (or shimgar or mario) among other things

There's still time to sign up! 24 players have signed up so far, but I just did some recruiting so, that number should be well over 30 by tomorrow morning. I'm hoping anyhow.

As of right now, SEAHAWKHARRY looks like a lock for the 500 Point newbie prize as far as I can tell. Unless some other newbies have signed up and haven't posted.

Some of you guys might be able to get good at this game QUICK. You might surprise yourself. I'll give you strategy tips. And if you end up in a Section with AT LEAST 1 aggressive player, you should be able to Win AT LEAST 1 or 2 games. And there's always a possibility that you could end up in a Section with 3 aggressive players. In which case, you might even be able to Win your Section, even as a newbie.

I recommend practicing vs this AI below, and resist the urge to play aggressively. Try to keep your pieces INSIDE of your opponents pieces. Once you get a corner, try to work FROM it. Remember, everything we do is to try to maximize our MOVE/OPTION COUNT, NOT our piece count. The pieces will come eventually.

One more thing, avoid playing the Hexes in Red until you get some more experience. These are called X-hexes. The reason why you want to avoid playing these Red hexes is because if you play these hexes, it makes you vulnerable to giving up a corner. And corners are very good to have because they are yours to keep.

If anyone has any questions, let me know!

This Tourney was sort of short notice, I wasn't expecting Ivan Gutorov to resign in that other game. So I didn't really get a chance to recruit some more Othello players like I wanted to. And the next 28 Hour time limit Tourney didn't start until right after Christmas, which is no good. So, I sort of rushed this one out.

But, as far as Othello players go... I did get confirmation that shimgar will be playing in this Tourney, and mmariomm sort of gave me confirmation. Ivan Gutorov hasn't said anything, so I'm not sure. RCCH is in, and PhanAnhLuong seems likely. And I think that's about it. Most of the rest of the players are just players I recruited from IYT, although... some of them have Won a TON of Othello/Reversi Tourneys on IYT.

For the next Tournament, I think I am going to try to recruit some more Othello players from the Othello Academy Discord if I can figure out a way to do it. OR recruiting more players on SBR would be good too. I've sort of given up on Facebook for the most part, even though I befriend a bunch of good Othello players on there, it's just difficult to get them interested in Hexversi. If eOthello had Hexversi it would be MUCH easier.

The Tournament has started! Try to get your Section Winner Picks in by Thursday, December 15th. You may copy others for the Section Winner picks, but if there is a tie, it will go to the person who made their picks first. Also make your Pick for Tournament Champion. You can pick anyone besides Holden2341, as that is my pick. Once a pick is taken for Tournament Champion, it cannot be selected again.

F-OFF to IYT for putting Daniel and myself in the same Section, yet again. Also, SEAHAWKHARRY I don't see you anywhere. Did you register? What is your username?

If anyone has any questions, let me know.

                              Good luck everyone!!!

But I picked you for two reasons. You are really good at this game. Probably one of the strongest openers I have played against. Games can be won or lost in the openings. Two, I knew you would be extra motivated that tournament from our DMs.

I kinda feel bad now tho. I see that only one person can pick a champion and I submitted my picks before you. I think you picked yourself as well.

Man I really messed up that game with REMO. I had him right where I wanted but really didn't have a way to exploit his unbalanced edges. I knew this one move was going to decide the game at the south edge. I picked the wrong one because I only thought two moves ahead instead of three. I just need to slow down. I still think I can sweep Joshua, hopefully.

I originally had the same picks as Ian, but I changed Section 4 from Las8 to Joshua, as Section 4 was the hardest decision for me as that is a REALLY evenly balanced Section IMO. I think all 4 Players could Win that Section. Remo is also a player that nobody selected that is good, and he Won a Reversi Tourney back in 1999 with 92 Players.

Yeah, you totally outplayed him in that game. He was very fortunate he was able to escape with a win. I think I know the move you are talking about. I made a puzzle for it. I'll post the puzzle now, and I'll post additional images with explanations within a day or two.

What's the BEST move for Purple?
So k2 looks like it should be a good move here in the image above. And it is really, but it doesn't give Green anywhere to move, so it forces Purple to move again, and after that, Purple's options aren't that great. So, when you have a "saved move" like this, it's usually good to try to use it to your advantage. In this situation, we want to force Green to move to f2 to give Purple the SE corner. Here's how we do it.

So imagine Purple plays c5 instead of k2. This will give Green exactly ONE option and that's at b5. And NOW Purple can play k2. This will force Green to play the SE X-hex at f2 next.

After Green plays f2, Purple can take the SE corner by playing f1.

I played it out it on my board and I filled it with Green and Purple O's in the screenshot below. If I calculated correctly, Purple would have Won 52-38, by starting with c5 for move #37.

In Othello there's a thing they call "Parity". You may want to look this up to get a better definition. But it's all about getting the last move in the pockets, because this will give you the most points. Towards the end of games, the best players are really good at manipulating the pockets as to always get the last move in the pockets. This is why it's usually good to move first into Odd pockets and usually bad to move first into pockets of 2. But sometimes you can manipulate or "swindle" the pockets, where you can get more moves than you normally "should". These are the things you want to look out for. REMO got lucky in this game for sure.

Thanks for doing that for me John! I was actually thinking of playing a7 instead after k2. I am not sure how that would have played out but I am definitely going to look up parity. Thanks again!

Christmas travel caused me to time out on three of my games. I only had a shot at winning one of them, so maybe it saved me some time.

I won both against robert s and I've got Finelinegamefarm beat in game #2. So its my best showing so far either way!!
