217 back in the day, spent two years on the Regional tour with not much success. One TV appearance, got my lunch handed to me 256-204. Game is a joke now, polyurethane balls hit the pocket like freight trains, grooved oil patterns make 160 bowlers 185 bowlers. Retired 5 years ago.
After about a 15-year absence from the game from 1980 to 1995, I went back to bowling and was wondering, gosh, a lot of guys with high averages! I never thought much about the fact that the bowling balls changed until one night I watched a regular old guy bowl big hooks without doing much upon release. In the old days when bowlers complained about the equipment, it was like "Yeah, right." There was something YOU were doing wrong. But now days, you DO change equipment like get a different bowling ball that reacts a different way and/or position yourself on the approach in reaction to the lane's changing oil pattern. It was much simpler in the old day but harder to get the higher scores.
So I learned about reactive bowling balls and started using a Red Wolf which I still use today. Within three months of changing to a reactive ball, I bowled my first 300 game.
After another 3 years away from the game, I came back this past fall. The guys who were bowling 210s three years ago were now bowling around 225! Our league already has 6 guys who've bowled 300 games and 2 guys reached over 800 series! Sheesh! This is getting ridiculous!
