William Hill Refusing to return 30k GBP back

I don't understand why they can't transfer the money to your bank account as soon as they finished their investigation or send a check or whatever

Poor on William Hill's part.

Just a wild guess but WH have rules relating to whether gambling is legal where the customer resides and Canada supposedly has different laws for different parts of Canada. None of this is helped by incoming new rules for WH, (on May 1 and May 7). Shops normally want to pay large winners by cheque or electronically. Having large amounts of cash in an unsecure shop is an issue for them. Does it have to be a cash payment? I understand WH may have a problem but that is their problem. It shouldn't be yours. Hopefully you get your money soon.

But if I was stuck in the UK over this, I think I would find a local solicitor with some experience in gambling matters and get some advice.

I don't know if this is part of what is happening at William Hill, but another UK book who has been going a bit crazy with KYC in recent weeks is Stakers, and they expalin theor actions this way;

"Following UKGC recommendations earlier this year there was a few changes in our standard procedures, which led to more detailed checks on certain individuals, as a result of their gambling activity. Stakers systems flagged a number of high-risk accounts requiring more extensive KYC, confirmation of Source of Funds and Source of Wealth depending on the alert triggered."

What Stakers does has nothing to do with extensive KYC. It's a scheme that has the goal to exhaust players until they give up and don't send in the required documents.

It sounds like this place is broke and they already spent your 30,000 LBS. (Which is 480,000 OZ, by the way). That's why they don't want to pay you back.

I recommend you to hire a lawyer, fill a complaint and start fighting in a court.

I seriously doubt they would take £30K. The op posted that he was from Canada, I looked at WH's international acceptance rules, and then read a quick brief about gambling rules in Canada. If the bettor's nationality wasn't a factor there wouldn't be rules about accepting bets from non-UK residents. Cash betting that amount is extremely rare. The UK Parliament has been paranoid about gambling in the last 10 years and is forcing through half-baked rules to 'protect customers'. None of that excuses WH's failure/inability/refusal to refund a void bet.

The bookies in UK/Ireland are a joke.

In shop odds are much worse than online. You have to request online odds which in the UK/Ireland are still shit. For whatever reason, they offer much more competitive odds in the US.

Also, their shops method for paying large wins is bullshit. If you win $500+ in EUR/GBP they have to “start” the timer for their bank vault in shop to open. I bet 500 GBP +120 on a tennis ML, it won, it took them 1.5 hours before their “vault randomly opened” after I attempted to cash it. Was only bet I made while traveling in London after that experience. According to them it will randomly open after 15-120 mins after requesting unlock (to go against thieves). Absolute BS still.

its common to have to collect the next day now for big amounts. or they may tell you to go to another shop, till eventually you lose at one shop.

onnce i got told to wait as the guy on the roulette machine may lose.

Especially when its only a refund and no skin off their ass. Thousands of clients will then be asking WillyHilly the same question, Where the fuk is his money????. They could see a potential daily drop in wagers coming in in the hundrds of thousands. far beyond them holding 30k would be worth.

In some cases the more bad publicity big UK books receive the more they fight to prove they are correct.

If you have a valid claim for a large amount like this, you are far better to try to deal with it privately via a lawyer as the first option before going nuclear on them.

Personally that would not be my primary concern if I was stuck in UK waiting on 30K pounds.

Some advice and a letter of demand could not cost too much.

My point was that acting like a vigilante on twitter could possibly be the least sensible thing the OP could do to further his cause at this point.

The UK has very strict AML laws now. I was at a casino there month ago and they needed ID and source of funds if you were going to cash in or out more than 2k gbp. The pit boss didn't hide the fact that it was a massive pain in the ass. In your case you showed ID before making the bet, so not sure how they can refuse to return the funds now. But without any other info I would be confident it's AML related.

2k is a little absurd requiring Source of Funds documentaion. Everyone in the UK that bets over 2k need to carry their lates pay stub? Just tell em u hit Ladbrokes VLTs for 5K and now want to give WillyHilly some sports action.
