    Question About Funding at 5Dimes
Hey guys I am planning on funding my 5Dimes account for the first time. I have elected to fund it with a money order. I'm sure some might think there are better ways to do this but for now let's go with the fact this this is the best way for me to fund my 5Dimes account. I contacted 5Dimes to chat with them regarding instructions for funding. Below is the chat I had (all names have been changed to protect the innocent). I have heard some of the time it is hard to deal with their customer service. This gentleman was very nice. So I wanted to make sure they got some good publicity too. THAT BEING SAID I THINK THERE ARE SOME ANSWERS HE GAVE ME THAT TO ME SET OFF SOME RED FLAGS. MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME IF THIS IS STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE OR IF I AM RIGHT TO BE CONCERNED.

Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Mark'
Mark: Hello. How may I assist you today?
ME: Hi Mark. I just purchased two $1000 money orders from Wal-Mart to fund my 5 Dimes account. I need to know what address to send this to and also I have some questions about what I should fill out on the money orders.
Mark: Can you please confirm your account number and password?
    ME: account number is XXXXXXX
    ME: password is XXXXXX
Mark: This is the complete address.
    Mark: Security Desk
    Mark: Red Planet
    Mark: Edificio Equus, Piso #6
Mark: San Pedro, San Jose, Costa Rica
    Mark: Zip Code 00000
ME: ok is there a phone number i should put on the fedex bill
    Mark: No Sir, just that.
ME: ok now on the money order i believe i am to leave the “pay to the order of” section blank. is that correct?
ME: but on the part that says “purchaser” and “address” do i fill out my name and address there?
Mark: You have to make sure you don't write a thing on the money order.
ME: ok. with the receipt portion of the money order i do detach that and keep it for my own records. is this correct?
    Mark: No Sir.
Mark: Just send it as it is
Mark: The only thing that we need besides the money order is the receipt stub and the store receipt for the purchase of the money order
Mark: That is all you need.
ME: ok just to confirm i need to send in the receipt that the Wal Mart clerk gave me, and do nothing at all to the money order.
    Mark: correct
    ME: ok thanks Mark
    Mark: You're welcome
ME: i think that is all the questions i have for you except when i send this in do i need to email a copy of the fed ex receipt to you?
    Mark: Not necessary.
ME: perfect. thank you very much have a good day.
    Mark: You're welcome
    Mark: Have a good one

I FOUND IT STRANGE THAT I DON'T FILL OUT ANYTHING ON THE MONEY ORDER. BUT STRANGEST OF ALL IS THAT I DON'T GET TO KEEP THE RECEIPT STUB. THAT SMELLS FISHY TO ME. AND THEY WANT ME TO SEND IN THE RECEIPT I GOT FROM WAL-MART IN AS WELL. WHY WOULD THEY NEED THAT TOO? WHAT PROOF WILL I HAVE LEFT IN CASE THESE ITEMS GET LOST IN SHIPMENT OR IF THEY DON'T GET PROPERLY CREDITED.

    ANY ANSWERS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Why didnt you send it person to person? they would have paid for the fees and it would have been in your account right away.

Mail it with a tracking number

Well they pay for all the fees on this as well. But is the fact that they want to have the receipt stub and the original receipt from Wal-Mart not unusual? When I send it I will use FedEx and have a tracking number. But what happens if it gets lost. Can I take an photocopy of the Wal Mart receipt and a copy of the money orders into Wal-Mart and get them to cancel the money orders and get my money back? It seems unlikely to me that Wal-Mart would be able to put a "stop payment" or whatever is done to terminate a money order without the original stub and/or original store receipt.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Although I do find it strange that they need the money order receipt, they probably need both because of all the thefts and illegal money orders out there. I wouldn't worry about 5 Dimes screwing you over too much.

A bit different but i would trust them, big picture does ripping your 2k really make sense? I would call and not live chat to verify and get names. A bit scary 'cause you could get the "envelope empty" but again i think it is secure. Best of luck let us know how it turns out.

I think most of my concern is not even with 5Dimes. My biggest concern is what happens if this package/envelope gets lost in delivery. By no fault of 5Dimes at all but where am I left then? We have an envelope out there floating around and I don't have any receipts left to use to go try and cancel the money orders. I don't know much about how money orders work. Maybe photocopies are ok to get this resolved if something were to occur. I THINK I AM JUST HOPING TO KNOW IF OTHERS WHO HAVE ELECTED TO USE THIS PROCESS WERE TOLD THE SAME THINGS AND ALSO IF ANYONE FAMILIAR WITH MONEY ORDERS COULD TELL ME WHAT RECOURSE I HAVE IF IT GETS LOST AND WHY DOES 5DIMES NEED ALL OF THE RECEIPTS?

I just spoke with a customer service representative on the phone. I explained to him my concern about not being able to keep the money order receipt stubs and Wal-Mart receipt. He spoke with his manager and said it was ok to send in a copy of the original receipt and a copy of the stubs. So I can keep the original of both. That makes me feel much much more secure about the process. Maybe there are still some potential problems I don't know about but I feel like if something happens in transit I have some recourse now. I'll update if there are any other issues.

I understand your concern on this. Sending it to a foreign country with no backup can be dangerous. I think this is probably a lesser known way to deposit so the CS rep probably didn't know how to deal with it.
