Buzz: Mattress Mack to Reportedly Bet $3 Million on Kentucky Derby

According to a report by Horse Racing Nation, in what's becoming tradition, Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale will make a large bet on a popular sporting event - this time, it's the Kentucky Derby.

McIngvale, who already has a small amount of money wagered on Smile Happy - the colt fathered by his stallion Runhappy, will place a $3M bet on the favorite of the 2022 race. 

The projected favorite is Epicenter, and McIngvale has vowed to bet at least $3M to upwards of $4M on the horse.

However, by laying this amount of money on one horse, he may singlehandedly determine the race's favorite as oddsmakers will have to adjust their liability - something to monitor as we inch closer to race day. 

While many believe McIngvale is wantonly gambling on major sporting events, such as when he recently won $11.2M on the Kansas Jayhawks to win the NCAA National Title, this is not the case.

McIngvale owns the Gallery Furniture retail chain that's prominent in Texas. He frequently runs in-store promotions leading up to these events and, to hedge on these, places wagers to limit his promotional liability.  

For the 2022 Kentucky Derby, any customer who purchases a $3,000 mattress will receive a refund if Mattress Mack wins his bet. 

So, while we wait to see who the favorite of this year's Kentucky Derby will be, we know that consumers and McInvgale will be rooting together while hoping the outcome doesn't match that of his Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl bet.
