The 2022 Stanley Cup Finals begin between the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday, and Caesars Sportsbook has already released futures odds for the 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Winner.

Unsurprisingly, the two teams playing in the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals are atop the 2023 Stanley Cup odds list with the Avalanche the betting favorite at +600, and the Lightning trading at +800.

For comparison, Colorado is a -175 favorite to win it all this season, and Tampa Bay is a +155 underdog at the sportsbook. (Checkout the SBR Stanley Cup Final Series PicksSame Game Parlay Picks and Game 1 Picks for Wednesday)

Foster, the Senior Hockey Trader at Caesars Sportsbook, offered a few key insights about the initial odds:

“The Rangers have the second-best goalie in the world playing for them,” Foster noted. “I put a lot of emphasis on the goaltending, because they make or break teams every year. When the goalie lets in a soft one, you can absolutely feel it on the television from the benches. I think them having odds this low is warranted, they have a great young core and strong goaltending. I thought they would be at this point next year, so there definitely could be some concern that they can take a step back.”

“Obviously we get a lot of action in Nevada, so that played a big factor in the Golden Knights’ odds,” Foster added. “But I’m lower on the Knights because they’re in cap hell right now. They have to trade at least one or two guys because of the signing of Jack Eichel. Their goaltending is a big question mark for me too. For all his flaws, Marc-Andre Fleury was the perfect goaltender for that team. The team definitely won’t look like it did last year or in prior years heading into next season.”

It’s worth noting the current odds at Caesars have a total implied probability of 130.6%, so across all 32 teams, each team is trading at just short of a dollar.

However, considering almost half the teams in the NHL can almost already be ruled out as Stanley Cup contenders next year, it’s at the top of the list where the odds are short.

On one hand, Colorado might never have a +600 number again, especially if they win it all this season.

On the other hand, though, are you willing to tie up an investment for approximately 12 months on the Avalanche at a number implying they have a 14.3% chance of winning the Stanley Cup next year?
