Looking for a new starting goaltender, the Edmonton Oilers targeted Jack Campbell, and signed the former Toronto Maple Leafs netminder to a five-year contract worth $25 million.

Jack Campbell to the Edmonton Oilers

Campbell, 30, played a career-high 49 games for the Maple Leafs last season, and had an incredible start to the season, recording a .939 save percentage in his first 25 games.

However, Campbell does not have a long track record as a durable starter and he did fade in the second half of the season with a .888 save percentage in his last 24 games.

While he does come with some risk, given that he does not have a long track record in the NHL, Campbell is a legitimate option as a starting goaltender, likely better than what the Oilers received last season from Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen, and this team should score enough to give Campbell adequate support.

Smith’s status for next season is in doubt, even though he is under contract with a $2 million cap hit, so 23-year-old Stuart Skinner would likely fill the backup role behind Campbell.

A five-year deal for Campbell is probably longer than ideal, but with so few starting goaltenders on the free agent market, there was no chance that the Oilers would land a starter without paying that kind of premium.

Signing Grade: B
