US Sports Betting Revenue & Handle: Tracking Betting Market Data 2025

Last Updated: June 14, 2025 4:14 PM EDT • 22 minute read X Social Google News Link

Sports betting remains one of the fastest-growing industries in the U.S. – at least when it comes to revenue.
With nearly $150 billion legally wagered nationwide in 2024 — and 2025 tracking slightly ahead of that pace — it’s clear that sports betting has carved out a massive role in the American sports ecosystem.
Below, we break down the most current numbers both nationally and by state, including monthly handle and hold for every legal jurisdiction. This page updates regularly, so check back often.
US Sports Betting Revenue: 2025 vs Previous Years
Let there be no doubt that sports betting continues to grow at a breakneck pace.
After taking in $57.6 billion in total legal wagers for the first five months of 2025, the U.S. has now seen nearly $520 billion in bets at legal sportsbooks since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was repealed in 2018.
And as expected, the best sportsbooks in North America have driven the majority of the action in nearly every state.
Here's a look at the yearly handle, revenue and hold percentage by year to date (and check out our handy glossary at the bottom of the page for definitions of these betting terms).

And while handle has been flat year-over-year through the first four months of 2025, three solid months of hold have Colorado pacing for a new record in the category this year.

Delaware Sports Betting Revenue
It's a good thing that The First State has seen healthy year-over-year gains in handle, because the state's hold rate remains dismal so far in 2025. BetRivers, the lone Delaware sports betting operator, is forced to hand over 50% of its revenue to the Delaware government, which makes that slim hold rate even more difficult to stomach.

Illinois Sports Betting Revenue
The Illinois sports betting landscape remains one of the most vibrant in the U.S. – and state legislators are taking full advantage of its popularity. They've introduced a tax on all wagers moving forward – prompting FanDuel to subsequently announce a bet surcharge in the same amount. DraftKings quickly followed suit.

Maine Sports Betting Revenue
Maine sports betting is off to a strong start, at least from a hold percentage: Four of five months have yielded a rate of 11.9% or higher, which is a full point above the best single-year showing for the state. One thing to monitor: March and May handles were both flat year-over-year, which could mean that sports betting is losing some of its luster in Maine.

Michigan Sports Betting Revenue
Not even a massive January has people feeling all that great about Michigan sports betting so far in 2025. April marked the first time the state surpassed its 2024 monthly tally, and despite the improved bet volume, taxes were down year-over-year for the second month in a row. That said, If the Tigers continue to dominate, we could see a dramatic turnaround over the summer.

Montana Sports Betting Revenue
Montana is known for wild variance in hold rate and tax revenue – but even the most optimistic of us couldn't have expected to see the state more than double its entire 2024 tax haul in just five months in 2025. A strong May, guided by a 15.3% hold rate that would have ranked fourth across all of 2024 – has Montana sky-high in the early going of 2025.

A nice April hold rebound was welcome news to operators, after March Madness losses cratered the state's tax income for the second year in a row.

North Carolina Sports Betting Revenue
North Carolina sports betting has established itself as a national powerhouse, generating more than $8.3 billion in handle through its first 15 months of operation. And while the 2025 hold rate has some catching up to do (thanks largely to soft showings in April and May), the NFL season should bring record numbers to the Tar Heel State.

Ohio Sports Betting Revenue
The nationwide parlay phenomenon apparently hasn't made its way into the Ohio sports betting environment quite yet. We (partly) jest, but there has to be some reason for the state's rock-bottom hold rate, which is trending to be a full four points lower than its first-year figure. Ohio sportsbooks pay an eye-opening 33% tax rate.

Oregon Sports Betting Revenue
Things are looking up for Oregon sports betting, which produced its first-ever $10 million+ gross revenue month outside the NFL season. And with those hold rates continuing to sizzle, Oregon is already halfway to surpassing its 2024 tax income rate with the entire 2025 NFL season still to come. Rhode Island Sports Betting Revenue
Rhode Island sports betting has flattened out year-over-year, just as it had in 2024. That's of little surprise given the state's sparse population and lack of sports betting options, but still can't sit well either with operators or with those who reap the tax benefits. One positive: Hold rate is trending to return to happier 2023 days.

A 14.6% hold percentage in May is the highest for the state since September 2024, enabling the state to generate nearly $200,000 more in tax revenue year-over-year for the month. Handle, on the other hand, remains flat compared to 2024 (and even 2023).

Wyoming Sports Betting Revenue
April saw a nice rebound for Wyoming sports betting operators, putting the state closer to its 2024 revenue and tax income paces through the first four months. That handle continues to grow year-over-year is a positive sign, and with the 2025 NFL season fast approaching, Wyoming should be in good shape to surpass its 2024 numbers.

States That Will Legalize Sports Betting in 2025
At least one state will be adopting legal sports betting in 2025; others may follow, though that will depend on how each prospective state's legislative session goes. Here's a look at the state(s) that will be introducing legal sports wagering this year:
States with Potential to Legalize Sports Betting
While more than three-quarters of all U.S. states have some form of legal sports wagering, there are still some notable holdouts. Here's a look at states that appear to have a path to legalized sports betting at some point in the future:
Future of US Sports Betting Revenue
What does the future hold for sports betting handles, revenues and hold percentages across the United States? Here are some factors that should pay a role in how these figures evolve:
More Legal States: Sports betting is now legal in 38 states and districts, with the majority of those welcoming business from the best sports betting apps. And while there aren't any states presently on the verge of joining the mix, it's quite possible that we could see further legalization in late 2024 or 2025, thereby increasing overall revenue potential.
Available Betting Markets: Developments here could have a dramatic positive or negative impact on sportsbooks' earning potential. While betting sites are constantly introducing new betting markets across a variety of sports, some – most notably, college player props – are being removed by legislators due to ongoing issues with player harassment.
More Betting Options: With Phase 1 of the U.S. sports betting maturity process (initial player acquisition and retention) essentially over, sports betting sites have now moved on to Phase 2: innovation. And both players and sportsbooks should reap the benefits here, between new ways to parlay picks, more niche sports coverage and a larger emphasis on microbetting.
Increased Notoriety: This is the biggest wild-card in the U.S. sports betting landscape. While we've seen positive examples of increased betting activity due to external factors (Taylor Swift, anyone?), a spate of controversial betting practices has cast a shadow over the industry, and further incidents are sure to adversely affect sports betting revenues.
Reduced Promo Spend: Access to many of the best sportsbook promos helped fuel a meteoric rise in sign-ups – but those days might be coming to an end. With only a handful of states yet to launch, and the majority of the best sports betting sites having curtailed their promotional spend, new customers might be tougher to pull in moving forward.
Glossary of Betting Market Terms
Handle: The "handle" refers to the total amount of money wagered by bettors on a particular event or series of events. It's a term commonly used in sports betting, horse racing, and other forms of gambling.
Gross Revenue: Gross revenue in sports betting refers to the total amount of money that a sportsbook or betting operator collects from bettors through wagers minus all winning bets. It represents the total revenue generated by the sportsbook before deducting expenses such as operating costs, taxes, and any other fees.
Hold: The "hold" refers to the percentage of the total wagers placed that the sportsbook keeps as profit after paying out winning bets. The hold is calculated by dividing the sportsbook's gross revenue (total amount of money collected from losing bets) by the total amount of money wagered.
Tickets: Also known as "receipts", tickets represent the total number of bets placed during a specific period or on a specific bet type or market. Bet amount is immaterial to ticket count.
