Nothing says college football like a weeknight game in Blacksburg with "Enter Sandman" hyping up a crowd of over 60,000 people.

  • Our Boston College vs. Virginia Tech prediction expects the Hokies to have the Eagles sleeping with one eye open following Thursday's game at Lane Stadium
  • Bill O'Brien's team may want to say its prayers with Virginia Tech favored by seven points - Boston College has failed to cover in three straight games
  • The Hokies came into the season viewed as a College Football Playoff odds sleeper before struggles early in the season sent their odds to never-never land

This ACC showdown is the first Power 4 matchup of our Week 8 college football predictions.

Boston College vs. Virginia Tech odds movement

Virginia Tech opened as a 7-point favorite at our college football betting sites. The line hasn't seen much movement throughout the week with most sportsbooks settling in with the Hokies -7.5.

However, just 35% of the money is on them covering, with 65% on the Eagles. The Over has 51% of the money, with the total hovering around 48.5.

Boston College vs. Virginia Tech against the spread prediction: Week 8

Virginia Tech to cover the spread: -7 (-108) ⭐⭐⭐

Boston College vs. Virginia Tech opening odds:

  • Boston College: +7 (-110)
  • Virginia Tech: +7 (-110)

These two teams are fairly equally matched on the surface. Virginia Tech is 36th in SP+ and Boston College is 49th. Both squads are also 3-3, with dynamic running QBs leading the way.

However, the schools are trending in two very different directions.

After opening the season with a win over Florida State and a near upset of Missouri, the Eagles looked worthy of the AP Top 25. Boston College has failed to cover in three straight games since then while playing Michigan State (72nd in SP+), Western Kentucky (81st), and Virginia (61st).

O'Brien's offense has been struggling while averaging just 3.1 yards per carry in those contests.

It's not as if BC can lean on its passing attack either, as Virginia Tech is 28th in the country in EPA per dropback thanks to a pass rush featuring Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Aeneas Peebles. And BC QB Thomas Castellanos has put up more turnover-worthy plays (seven) than big-time throws (six) this season, per PFF.

Drones is the beast under BC's bed

While the Hokies haven't lived up to the hype, their offense still boasts the talent to score against a BC defense that's 67th in the country in EPA per dropback. The Eagles will also be without star cornerback Amari Jackson.

That should give Kyron Drones and his plethora of talented pass-catchers the chance to make plays through the air, with BC likely focused on stopping Bhayshul Tuten on the ground.

If Virginia Tech can cover for the fourth time in five games, a $10 bet leads to a $9.26 profit.

Bhayshul Tuten Over 92.5 rushing yards (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Boston College defenders will be gripping their pillows tight trying to sleep at night before taking on Tuten. One of the nation's best running backs is averaging 100.8 rushing yards per game this season, and he's gone over 92.5 in four of his last five.

With 51 missed tackles forced in six games, the Eagles will struggle to bring Tuten down. He's 11th in the country in rushing yards after contact (462) and 14th in forced missed tackles (33).

His big-play ability (which includes 13 runs of 15-plus yards) should help him cruise past this line at bet365 and turn a $10 bet into an $8.70 profit. This same prop is set at 95.5 at our other best sportsbooks, with the price between -114 and -120.

Best odds: -115 via bet365 | Implied probability: 53.49%
