Although we'd give the Buckeyes the clear edge in this matchup from a talent perspective, it's still slightly surprising to see Notre Dame be such a massive underdog. Getting the Irish at +9.5 seems a little wild considering they've covered in 11 straight games.

Under Freeman's guidance, the Irish have been particularly competent as an underdog, too. While Notre Dame has been an underdog only seven times during Freeman's tenure, it's 6-1 ATS and 4-3 straight-up - that includes covering as a 15-point underdog against the Buckeyes in 2022.

I'm taking the Irish to cover the +9.5, and I'm not alone in backing the boys from South Bend, either. According to the betting consensus, the public is all over the Irish with 64% taking them to cover the spread and just 36% backing the Buckeyes.

So, it made sense seeing Ohio State open at -9.5 following the Cotton Bowl victory over Texas, before the line quickly moved to -8.5. But since then, the line has hovered between -8 and -9.5, for the most part - Ohio State's also already the 2025-26 CFP National Championship opening odds favorite, too.

While I've detailed why this Buckeyes roster is the best in the country, I still think that's too many points, and I was expecting this line to shift down to at least -7.5.

The projected score from College Football Insiders is a 25-20 win for Ohio State, and I'm right there with that - I have the Buckeyes winning 24-20. This is another reason I find this game total to be a bit of a head-scratcher.

It's moved up to 46.5 after opening at 45.5, despite the fact that these two teams both rank top five in SP+ on defense and are both top five in EPA per rush and EPA per dropback on defense. These are two of the three best defenses in the country - I'd argue only Texas over Notre Dame.

The public doesn't seem to care, though, with a whopping 72% of the money on the Over, probably because of players like Jeremiah Smith and TreVeyon Henderson being enticing CFP National Championship MVP odds options.

Notre Dame's inability to consistently throw the ball mixed with the Irish's Al Golden likely putting together a strong game plan to bracket Smith has me thinking the game total should drop back down to 45.5, but it won't.

With minimal movement to the spread throughout the week, don't expect it to change much by kick on Monday. Instead, see if that game total keeps rising because the Under is mighty appetizing.
