Charlotte has been one of the lowest-scoring offenses in the nation this season and has just two wins in its first seven games. However, it might have discovered a ball-control strategy that works. Quarterback Jalon Jones has 26 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown as the 49ers controlled the clock in last week's 10-7 victory over East Carolina.

Charlotte has bounced between Jalon Jones and Trexler Ivey at the quarterback position this season, resulting in an underwhelming 300.7 yards per game. That puts the 49ers 117th in FBS in total offense.
But Jalon Jones may have revealed the 49ers’ most sensible plan of attack with his performance in a 10-7 win over ECU last week. For the first time since the season-opener, Ivey didn’t record a snap, freeing Jones to rack up 26 rushing attempts for 127 rushing yards and the team’s lone touchdown on the ground. Charlotte’s 29.6 seconds per play is one of the slowest tempos in the country, and keeping the ball on the ground with the senior quarterback allowed the 49ers to minimize the threat against their defense en route to their first FBS win of 2023.
Florida Atlantic ranks 83rd in adjusted defensive efficiency, noticeably worse than the 55th-ranked ECU unit that Jones just torched. FAU has allowed 171.5 rushing yards per game, ranking 97th in the nation in run defense. Particular to the Owls’ efforts against mobile quarterbacks, FAU has permitted 225 rushing yards on 49 attempts to the collection of opposing quarterbacks that have profiled with any degree of rushing ability, allowing 4.6 YPC to that group.
In the six games where Jones has seen considerable playing time, he has carried the ball for 66 or more yards four times. For contests in which he drew at least six rushing attempts, Jones hasn’t finished with fewer than 49 yards.
