When Georgia won the SEC Championship against Texas, the Bulldogs were expected to make a serious push for their third national championship under Kirby Smart. That's why when Notre Dame thrashed Indiana to set up a Sugar Bowl showdown with Georgia, Smart's squad opened as the favorite.
However, confirmation that starting QB Carson Beck would miss the remainder of the season due to an elbow injury that was sustained in the win over Texas slowly began shifting the odds. While backup Gunner Stockton is a former blue-chip recruit, he's thrown just 32 passes this season.
Given the Fighting Irish rank No. 1 in EPA per dropback on defense and No. 3 in EPA per rush on offense, it wasn't a surprise to see the line shift so much in Notre Dame's direction.
Another factor that could impact the odds is the postponement of the game from New Year's Day at 8:45 p.m. ET to today at 4 p.m. ET after at least 15 people were killed in New Orleans in what the FBI is investigating as an "act of terrorism," per CNN.
All over social media, there have been reports of fans having to leave New Orleans early because of logistics with flights and hotel bookings, as well as some fans and media members leaving due to the scary situation that unfolded on Jan. 1 and the unnerving details that have followed.
Football feels insignificant and unimportant during a time like this, and the game being played tonight will feel heavy, so it's easy to understand why fans, media, and the community at large may not be comfortable attending or celebrating the Sugar Bowl.
With the tragedy hanging over the game, and the difficulty it's already had on fans and the community in New Orleans, there could be a lack of turnout for both sides at the game. It's more likely to have an impact on the Notre Dame side, though, which could lead to the odds shifting slightly back toward the Bulldogs.
It's more than a 14-hour drive from New Orleans back to South Bend while Athens is just over eight hours from The Big Easy. So theoretically, flight logistics could have a lesser impact on Georgia's crowd, which likely would have had a larger turnout in the first place just due to the proximity of the game and the fact that Notre Dame fans have already had to pay to attend one CFP game.
I'm not sure if that's enough to see this line move much, given Notre Dame's in better shape than Georgia due to Beck's injury. I'd take Notre Dame to cover up to -2.5.
