No. 13 BYU hosts unranked Oklahoma State to wrap up Friday's Week 8 college football slate with a late kickoff from Provo, Utah.

Our Oklahoma State vs. BYU prediction based on odds from our best college football betting sites tries to gauge a game between two teams that have put together completely different seasons in 2024.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are 3-3 after losing three consecutive games to Utah, Kansas State, and West Virginia, with the last two defeats by double-digit margins. Conversely, the 6-0 BYU Cougars have been dominating teams defensively, including a signature 38-9 win over No. 17 Kansas State in mid-September.

Oklahoma State vs. BYU opening odds:

BYU's defense can shut down Cowboys’ offense

Oklahoma State has completed under 59% of its passes during the team's three-game slump, and the challenge doesn't get any easier against the Cougars in Provo on Friday night.

BYU’s defense is allowing a stingy 50.9 completion percentage in 2024 while giving up four total passing touchdowns, including none to Kansas State. Oklahoma State QB Alan Bowman has recorded 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions, throwing two-plus picks during each of the Cowboys’ three losses.

The Cougars’ defense is also good at forcing turnovers. It's recorded eight in the team's last three games against Kansas State, Baylor, and Arizona.

BYU will undoubtedly win the turnover battle. The Cougars’ offense will be able to finish drives with short fields to rack up points and make Oklahoma State's offense one-dimensional.

Momentum and home-field advantage

Momentum from turnovers, plus the home-field advantage at Provo, will prove to be too much for Mike Gundy’s Cowboys to overcome.

Even BYU’s run defense is good while allowing 3.7 yards per carry and only two rushing touchdowns during conference play. Running back Ollie Gordon hasn't fulfilled preseason expectations yet, and it’ll be tough sledding against the Cougars’ defense with a loud crowd and most likely a BYU lead for the duration of this game.

Oklahoma State did beat BYU 40-34 on the Cowboys' home turf a year ago. But these are two different programs right now, and the Cougars are simply too good defensively to not cover -8.5 as part of your college football Week 8 predictions.

BYU team total Over 30.5 points (-130) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

BYU’s offense has also been a significant reason for the team's success.

QB Jake Retzlaff has thrown 14 touchdown passes and five interceptions with only a 60.0 completion percentage. However, the Cougars’ run game is strong, cycling between Retzlaff and the team's two lead running backs (Hinkley Ropati and LJ Martin) to average over 4.6 yards per carry.

Retzlaff has been lethal in the red zone, recording three-plus passing touchdowns in four of BYU’s six games this season. Oklahoma State’s defense is allowing 5.5 yards per carry, and it's surrendered seven rushing touchdowns in the school's last two games while failing to generate takeaways.

Retzlaff doesn’t commit many turnovers. So with a stout defense backing him up, BYU's offensive efficiency will remain strong enough to score at least 31 points. That's why I’m backing the Cougars to go Over their team total of 30.5 points.

BYU has scored 31-plus points in five of six games this season, so let’s continue backing this trend against a weak Oklahoma State defense at home on Friday night.
