2024 ISCO Championship Odds & Expert Picks: Rising Star Clanton Highlights Alternate Field

Last updated: July 10, 2024 9:15 AM EDT • 6 min read X Social Google News Link

For the first time in the modern golf era, an amateur is the betting favorite for a PGA Tour tournament. Our expert picks for Keene Trace Golf Club will look for better value - and safer bets.
Luke Clanton, a T-41 finisher in the U.S. Open, is the betting favorite by this week's ISCO Championship odds following a T-2 result in last week's event. The Florida State University product is ranked 212th in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) after recording two top-10 finishes through his three events played this year.
The ISCO Championship was formerly known as the Barbasol Championship. From 2022 onward it has been a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour and plays opposite the Genesis Scottish Open. It has been played at Keene Trace Golf Club since 2018.
I'm not expecting much change to the British Open odds as a result of this event, and bettors should be watching the Scottish Open odds for this week's marquee event.

ISCO Championship picks
Carson Young to win (+4000)
Young, ranked 143rd in the OWGR entering this week, is one of my regular outright bets in any alternate field. He's knocked at the door several times, including last week's T-5 finish in the John Deere Classic, yet awaits that breakthrough victory that would move him into an event like the Scottish Open rather than playing in Kentucky this week.
The second most accurate driver of the golf ball in this field across everyone's last 20 measured rounds, is among the field leaders in strokes gained: off-the-tee. He's also one of the few in this watered-down field gaining strokes on approach to the green, and he's a strong putter.
Though Young has never played Keene Trace Golf Club professionally, he sets up as a course fit while ranking 66th on the PGA Tour this season in birdie-or-better percentage from inside of 125 yards.
I love these events because of the wide variance in the outright betting market across the board. Young's a perfect example of that with these +4000 odds from Caesars returning an extra $140 in profit on a winning $10 bet vs. the +2600 odds from FanDuel.
Best odds: +4000 via Caesars | Implied probability: 2.94%

Patrick Fishburn to finish top 40
BetMGM (and bet365) are offering the outlier price on Fishburn to finish in the top 40. He's +135 for a top 30 finish at DraftKings but those odds drop all the way to -120 for a top 40 result.
While he missed the cut against a weak field in the John Deere Classic last week, he was excellent off the tee over two rounds but dreadful on and around the greens. The former is the far more important statistic this week, and he ranks third in weak field in strokes gained: off-the-tee across his last 12 measured rounds.
Best odds: +115 via BetMGM | Implied probability: 46.51%

ISCO Championship favorite
Luke Clanton (+1200)
Clanton tied for 10th in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and for second in the John Deere Classic following his breakthrough showing in the U.S. Open. Those results have him as a heavy favorite in the weakest field he's competed in to date.
In his limited action, he's been exceptional off the tee with both distance and accuracy supporting his 1.15 strokes gained per round in that metric. He'll need both of those aspects of his game for Keene Trace Golf Club.
But it's important to remember he's still an amateur and playing three weeks in a row on the PGA Tour can take a toll. Clanton opened with +1500 odds but those are down to a market-best of +1200 as of Tuesday afternoon. The odds imply a 7.69% win probability for the amateur in the 156-man field and would fetch a profit of just $120 on a winning $10 outright bet. The price is far too high.
I'd pass on Clanton with plenty of value available further down the board.

How to bet on golf
When it comes to golf betting, it's essential to understand the various types of wagers available and how to assess player performance effectively. Begin by acquainting yourself with the common bet types, such as outright winners, each-way bets (which encompass both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups, and proposition bets tailored to specific tournament events, like hole-in-one occurrences or player performances on designated holes.
Once you've determined your preferred bet types, conduct thorough research on players, course conditions, recent form, and other pertinent factors that could influence outcomes. Delve into player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may impact a player's chances of success.
Armed with this information, you can make well-informed betting decisions and increase your likelihood of success in golf betting.
