Rahm is seeking his third major championship after finishing T-14 in the Masters and T-8 in the PGA Championship. He hasn't finished worse than T-9 through eight events on the LIV Series this year. The 2021 U.S. Open champion was the low amateur in the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
Rahm led the field with 3.49 strokes gained: off-the-tee on Thursday, helping to offset his 0.57 strokes lost with his putter.
Those stats are indicative of some improved play over the next 54 holes, and he'll tee off at 7:29 a.m. ET on Friday.

Scheffler's U.S. Open odds closed around +280 before the opening round. Despite a round of plus-3, 73 on Thursday, those odds have grown only to +650 with a seven-stroke deficit and 54 holes to play.
This is all to be expected for the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and the reigning PGA Champion. Scheffler entered this week having won three of his past four tournaments, and it would take a bigger name than Spaun atop the leaderboard to knock him further back of the betting favorites.
Uncharacteristically, it was Scheffler's iron play and approach game that was his undoing during Round 1. The PGA Tour's leader in strokes gained: approach should be in line for a bounce-back round on Friday and could fly up the leaderboard by the end of Round 2, especially with his 7:40 a.m. ET tee time amid more favorable morning conditions.

Spaun entered U.S. Open week at No. 25 in the OWGR after missing the cut in the Memorial Tournament as his last start. His best result of 2025 was a runner-up (playoff loss) in The Players Championship. He finished 50th in the Masters and T-37 in the PGA Championship.
The 34-year-old American was lights out with his putter on Thursday, gaining 4.18 strokes on the greens for the round. That's a glaring red flag and sign of upcoming regression, especially as the greens at Oakmont become even firmer and faster over the next 54 holes.
To Spaun's credit, he gained 4.44 strokes from tee to green on Thursday, but Brooks Koepka, Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Collin Morikawa are just some of the top pre-tournament contenders who beat him in that metric on the day.

Hovland is five shots back of Spaun and two ahead of Scheffler after the opening round. The Norwegian star ranked second in the field with 4.66 strokes gained: approach on Thursday, but he lost 3.07 strokes with his putter. He had averaged 0.25 SG: putting per round across his previous 20 measured rounds.
Hovland missed the cut in last year's U.S. Open but had three previous top-20 finishes in the major championship. He finished T-21 in the Masters and T-28 in the PGA Championship this year.
His second round will begin at 7:40 a.m. alongside Scheffler and Morikawa (even). Playing his first two rounds in the tournament's super group will help prepare him for the weekend pressures as he chases the biggest win of his career.
