The San Francisco Giants are currently without five-time Gold Glove Award winner Matt Chapman. Chapman sprained his right hand sliding into first base on June 8 against the Atlanta Braves. Giants fans and fantasy baseball owners are now wondering when Chapman will be back on the field. Below, we will dish out an injury update on Chapman, and deliver an expected return date.

🚑 When will Matt Chapman return and be back with Giants?

Chapman met with Dr. Stephen Shin, a Los Angeles-based hand specialist on June 13, and received positive news. Shin said the Giants third baseman can start rehabbing his hand as soon as later this week.

“[Shin] was pleasantly surprised with how fast I was healing and said usually somebody that had the injury I had would probably be in more pain at this point, so it was good news,” Chapman told NBC Sports Bay Area. “That made him feel confident enough to tell us that I could probably start to begin to pick up a bat and try to do exercises in a week.

“I want to be smart so that when I do come back, I’m able to be productive for the team and be able to not come out of the lineup because I tried to rush and come back,” Chapman added.

Giving the Giants insurance at third base is Rafael Devers, whom San Francisco acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a Fathers’ Day blockbuster. Devers played third base in Boston for years before becoming primarily a designated hitter this year. The move for Devers will give the Giants even more time to slowly work Chapman back into the fold.

A post-MLB All-Star break return for Chapman would make a lot of sense. Here is a look at the Giants’ schedule to open the second half of the regular season.

  • Friday, July 18: San Francisco Giants at Toronto Blue Jays
  • Saturday, July 19: San Francisco Giants at Toronto Blue Jays
  • Sunday, July 20: San Francisco Giants at Toronto Blue Jays
  • Monday, July 21: San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves
  • Tuesday, July 22: San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves
  • Wednesday, July 23: San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves
  • Friday, July 25: New York Mets at San Francisco Giants

⏳ How long will Matt Chapman be out for?

Chapman’s hand injury appears to be a mild sprain, which takes 2-4 weeks to recover from. MLB teams typically go on the longer side with these recovery timelines, unless it is at a crucial point in the season.

The Giants third baseman has already been out nine days. If he were to return in the team’s first game after the MLB All-Star break, it would be 40 days from when the injury occurred.
