Tylor Megill has been a key cog in the New York Mets' rotation for several years now. Carlos Mendoza’s squad will have to endure life without Megill for a period of time, however, as the 29-year-old hurler went down with a right elbow sprain in mid-June. Mets fans and fantasy baseball managers are now wondering when Megill will be back and return to the New York rotation. Below, we will dish out an injury update on Megill, given all of the current information available.
🚑 When will Tylor Megill return and be back with Mets?
Megill felt “some pulling” in his right elbow during his last start on June 14. The righty went just 3 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs to the Tampa Bay Rays in that outing.
The Mets then placed Megill on the 15-day IL on June 17, due to a right elbow sprain. An MRI showed that there is no structural damage in the elbow.
“Considering all things elbow-related, I would say this is probably the best outcome that could happen from something like this,” Megill said, via Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
Still, Megill is expected to miss a little over a month of action. Here is a look at the Mets’ schedule around the time that Megill is likely to return, barring any setbacks.
- Wednesday, July 23: Los Angeles Angels at New York Mets
- Friday, July 25: New York Mets at San Francisco Giants
- Saturday, July 26: New York Mets at San Francisco Giants
- Sunday, July 27: New York Mets at San Francisco Giants
- Monday, July 28: New York Mets at San Diego Padres
Megill is 5-5 so far this season, with a 3.95 ERA. He has struck out 39 batters in 2025.
⏳ How long will Tylor Megill be out for?
Megill is likely going to be out five weeks or so. That said, MLB teams are more cautious than ever when it comes to rehabbing a pitcher with an injured elbow - and for good reason.
One recent cautionary tale is the case of San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove. Musgrove experienced a “right elbow sprain,” similar to Megill’s initial diagnosis. This injury caused Musgrove to miss action from May 1 to May 21 of last season. He appeared in two games upon his return and then went back on the injured list with bone spurs in that same elbow. For this second IL stint, Musgrove was out from May 26 to Aug. 12, 2024.
The Padres righty then came back once again to make nine regular-season appearances and he started a playoff game against the Atlanta Braves. Musgrove had to leave that playoff game, however, as more elbow issues arose. He ultimately had to have Tommy John surgery and is out for the entire 2025 season.
Surely, the Mets will be making sure that Megill is 110% before placing him back on the mound.
