Is an upset brewing in F1 this weekend? Peruse our Austrian Grand Prix picks and predictions for a surprising outright winner selection, the best race props on the board, and more based on the best F1 odds.

The Formula 1 season continues across the pond on Sunday morning in Austria. The 42nd running of the Austrian Grand Prix will take place at Red Bull Ring which has hosted the event every year since 2014.

Charles Leclerc emerged victorious in last year’s race, but Max Verstappen has been the most consistent driver here in recent editions and is running away with the 2023 F1 Championship odds. The defending F1 series champion has won the Austrian GP in three of the last five years.

Verstappen comes into the weekend on a four-race winning streak and narrowly edged out Leclerc for the pole position this weekend as he looks to continue his dominant 2023 season.

Here are our best bets and 2023 Austrian Grand Prix picks for Sunday’s action at Red Bull Ring (odds via our best sports betting apps; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Austrian Grand Prix predictions

Outright winner: Charles Leclerc (+1300 via FanDuel) ⭐

Sometimes, it is worth betting against an overwhelming favorite in sports if the prices on other contenders yield enough value and merit. Bettors are looking at such a scenario regarding Sunday’s Austrian GP picks. Verstappen is rightfully a massive favorite after nabbing the pole. All of our best sports betting sites imply that he has an 80% probability or better of winning the race.

While the most likely outcome is clearly that Verstappen will capitalize on nabbing another pole and earn his fifth straight win, one can’t help but consider a play on the defending race winner. After all, Leclerc came in only 0.048 seconds behind Verstappen in Saturday’s qualifying session.

In many ways, the scenario heading into Sunday’s race mirrors that of a year ago. Despite starting second on the grid behind Verstappen, Leclerc was able to pass him multiple times on track to score the victory. Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz will be starting third on Sunday and was also very strong last year prior to having a power unit failure.

Clearly, Leclerc and Ferrari have their ducks in a row when it comes to racing at Red Bull Ring. It won’t be easy to navigate past Verstappen for the second year in a row, but there is certainly a chance. The fact that FanDuel’s 13-1 price is up to three dollars better than competing sportsbooks adds to the value of wagering on a Leclerc victory.

Top 6 finish parlay: Lewis Hamilton (-440), Charles Leclerc (-440) and Carlos Sainz (-380) = -111 (via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

While it can be tough to find great odds on any reliable top-6 finish, FanDuel’s parlay option gives bettors another method to attack this market. For the Austrian Grand Prix, the trio we have selected will all be starting in the top five after solid qualifying runs on Saturday.

Ferrari’s Leclerc and Sainz will be lining up second and third while Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton will start fifth on the grid. FanDuel’s straight pricing gives both Leclerc and Hamilton an 81.5% chance of placing within the top six and Sainz a 79.2% chance of doing the same.

We documented Leclerc's phenomenal performance in last year’s race above. It’s important to note that Sainz was on his way to passing Verstappen on track as well prior to the equipment failure. Although Red Bull Ring has not been Hamilton’s best track over the course of his spectacular F1 career, he won here back in 2016 and gained five spots in his third-place run a year ago.

As all three drivers are considered safe bets to finish in the top six, there is no true liability as far as our three-leg parlay combination. The -111 odds that are the result of combining the three together are much more appealing than betting on each driver individually in this market.

Head-to-head matchup: Fernando Alonso (-120 via BetMGM) vs. Sergio Perez ⭐⭐⭐

For our final Austrian GP best bet, we are jumping into the head-to-head matchup section of the menu. At the time of writing, BetMGM is the only one of our best sportsbooks that is pitting Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso up against Red Bull Racing’s Sergio Perez. Based on how Saturday’s qualifying session went, it’s easy to understand why.

Perez was actually one of the fastest cars in qualifying and very nearly matched the pace set by his teammate, Verstappen, to place second in Q1. While his times were once again near the top of the board in Q2, he had all of his times taken away due to running the final turn too wide.

Due to not completing a successful qualifying lap, Perez was eliminated in Q2 and relegated to the 15th starting spot on Sunday’s race grid. As a result, he will be lining up eight spots behind Alonso, who was steady throughout qualifying and will go off seventh.

With a favorable advantage right from the start, it’s hard to fathom why BetMGM has both Alonso and Perez priced at identical -120 odds in this head-to-head matchup. Alonso also comes in with a bit more momentum, having finished runner-up in two of the last three races.
