F1 Championship odds favorite Lando Norris and teammate Oscar Piastri impressed in the sole practice session, finishing first and third. Lewis Hamilton then won Saturday's sprint session, with the Ferrari driver edging Piastri and Max Verstappen.

The preamble culminated with Piastri winning qualifying and taking pole position for Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit on Sunday at 3 a.m. ET (ESPN), and his result forms the bedrock of our 2025 Chinese Grand Prix best bets and predictions.

🏁 Chinese Grand Prix predictions, expert picks & best bets at Shanghai International Circuit

It's already been a thrilling start in Shanghai, with several drivers primed to challenge for a spot atop the podium in the second race of the season. Norris was excellent in the only practice session, but he made a costly mistake in sprint qualifying, dropping him to sixth for Saturday's sprint. He couldn't find enough speed in Saturday's sprint session, finishing eighth.

A couple of hours later, the winningest driver at the Chinese Grand Prix won the sprint, with Hamilton demonstrating his eagerness to rebound after a disappointing 10th-place finish in Melbourne.

And then there's Piastri, who was unerring in the first three events, finishing third in both Friday precursors before securing second in the sprint. He culminated the pre-race festivities by winning qualifying and taking pole position for the first time in his blossoming career. I predict Piastri will maintain his advantage and win the Chinese Grand Prix.

🏆 Pick to win Chinese Grand Prix: Oscar Piastri (+100 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Like the pit crew for an arriving MCL39, I'm drawn to Piastri for this race. And I was drawn to him prior to his outstanding performances in the pre-race festivities. I picked Piastri in our Chinese Grand Prix odds and predictions at the start of the week as I loved his race in Melbourne before his decisive mistake.

He won't be unnecessarily overzealous again.

Along with teammate and F1 Championship odds favorite Norris, Piastri is driving the fastest car on the grid.

With the Chinese Grand Prix featuring one of the longest straights on the calendar, Piastri can let it rip. And with no threat of a torrential downpour, he won't need to be concerned about impending inclement weather. Ten of 17 who've taken pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix have gone on to win the race, which bodes well for the 23-year-old.

I hope you backed him when his odds were +350. BetMGM offers the best price from our best sportsbooks, and a winning $10 bet will profit $10.

💎 Best value bet to win Chinese Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton (+1100 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hamilton won't let a disappointing debut with Ferrari throw him off course. He demonstrated his bounce-back ability in Friday's sprint qualifying, taking pole for Saturday's sprint session. He then doubled down, winning the sprint and adding eight points to his season tally.

It's only a matter of time before he and his new car form a formidable symbiotic relationship. The same goes for his new team and teammates. And, based on his performance in the sprint event, that adaptation period may already be finishing.

Hamilton finished fifth in qualifying and will have some work to do to overturn the disadvantage. However, nobody is more successful in China, with Hamilton winning six Chinese Grand Prix events and taking six poles. Both are records.

I'll take the +1100 price FanDuel is offering, with a $10 winning bet leading to an $110 profit.

🎯 Best long shot to win Chinese Grand Prix: Charles Leclerc (+3600 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐

Ferrari's struggles Down Under were surprising. I'm sure the entire Scuderia team thought the same, though Ferrari's car is inarguably one of the fastest at this embryonic stage of the season. Once they work out the teething issues and the new teammates learn how to race seamlessly together, Ferrari will pose a massive threat in the constructors' championship standings.

Leclerc finished second in the practice session, fourth in sprint qualifying, fifth in the sprint, sixth in qualifying, and fourth in last season's Chinese Grand Prix. He's been knocking on the door in Shanghai, and now he could be poised to bash it down. A winning $10 bet would profit $280.

Land Norris before the Las Vegas Grand Prix

🔥 Best prop bet for Chinese Grand Prix: Lando Norris fastest lap (+120 via bet365) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Norris, the defending fastest lap champion, finished last season with the quickest lap six times. He started the season with a blistering pace in Melbourne, posting the fastest lap there. And Norris is driving the fastest car.

He was also the fastest driver in Friday's practice session and would have threatened Hamilton's victory had he not made a critical mistake.

🚀 Best long-shot prop bet for Chinese Grand Prix: Jack Doohan DNF (+1000 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐

Alpine's Jack Doohan has been struggling since the season started. He didn't finish in Melbourne or impress on Friday in Beijing. He's also having trouble with the car early in his first season with Alpine. Confidence in himself and his car must be low, which is the perfect recipe for his second straight DNF.

💡 How to bet on Chinese Grand Prix

When betting on any Grand Prix, there are many things to consider, some more crucial than others:

  • Follow what happens closely during the practice sprint sessions, and qualifying. Those events offer invaluable insights into how each driver is performing on the race circuit in advance of the grand prix.
  • Check the forecast and find out which teams/drivers perform well in various conditions. For example, Verstappen took advantage of a rain-soaked track at the Australian Grand Prix for the season opener.
  • Previous race results in China are also important.
  • Take a look at historic Chinese Grand Prix results, seeing who has established a successful track record. For example, Hamilton is the winningest driver at the Chinese Grand Prix.
